We made one called "The Bus" in Poggy which could fit 6 of us on it. We used to career out of control down Warner Road throwing conkers at people - it was a miracle we never killed anyone. One of the kids went on holiday with The Bus locked in his garden shed. The rest of us were horrified and broke into his shed to get it out. We all had embarrassing visits from the local plod. Eventually the wheel buckled during an attempt to see how many would fit on it, so it ended up as "bunny wood".
In answer to your initial reply we once went sledging on St Paul's field in an old tin bath. I reckon we'd have about ten of us in it at a time. None of the plastic stuff from decathlon.
I love snow. By the way from what I remember the correct term in those days was "trolley" rather than "go-kart". Just to be a pendant.
Pendant lol. Definitely a go cart in my day... obviously (cough) we were a little bit more up to date than your lot!
They were called trolleys in our day. No-one possessed anything resembling a drill so we used to stick a poker in the fire till red hot and then burn a hole in a plank of wood for the front pivot, which basically was a loosely tightened nut and bolt. Brakes were for puffs.
My 2 nephews have just built one with their friend, with stuff they have found in my father in laws shed. It got me thinking that you don't see many kids being creative these days it's all we used to do as young uns. Safe to say they have modified it several times and at one stage was a double decker but has now been reduced to a single decker with fully waterproof roof This is how it started out
Sledging We used to tobogan down Darfield Main muck stack on old conveyor belting - didn't need snow either. Covered in bruises, grazes and 5hit by the time we got to the bottom but it was great fun
If anyone dumped any oilcloth we used to tear it into six inch squares and throw it in the playing fields. Predecessor to the frizbee. Or use it for sledging down grass banks, shiny side down.
Anyone remember home made throwing arrows?....the flights were made from playing cards......imagine the cafuffle now H&S an all that.
