Don't particularly like loan players at the best of times

Although some of those we brought in last season were head and shoulders above what we've seen in the past. But to have three loan players in by mid-July is a situation I can't even begin to understand.

A manager usually spends the summer wheeling and dealing, trying to build a squad for the upcoming season. After the transfer window shuts at the end of August, if their team still looks *****, with massive gret 'oles in certain positions where a decent player should be, the manager then panics and signs a few loan players.

By signing loan players so early it seems to me we're not even going to try to build a squad, we're going to rely on loans from the off. That's bad enough in itself, but I've also lost count of the number of times I've been told, as a Barnsley fan, by the powers that be at Oakwell, that we're not going to waste money on loan signings any more. We always do like, but we've never before chalked **** on bothering building a squad and started bringing in a team of loan players almost a month before the season kicks off.

    It's ******* bizarre.

Pretty sure that 'youth loans', which Rothwell and Pearson will be signed as, involve us paying no fee/wages. Agree with what you're saying, though. You'd like to think that all of our squad would be permanent signings at this stage of the season, with the exception of loanees like Wilkinson, where a permanent move is potentially at the end of the loan.

Mind you, with how we seem to be disposing of permanent signings at present, I don't think it matters how/if they're contracted to the club.

It's dumb, particulary if Holgate and Digby leave permanently as makeweights for this "deal".

I'm used to the loan market being used at the start of the season. Hell, for the past 4 or 5 seasons we've had the manager say "we'll wait for the loan window to open" after we've missed out on all our targets but to have three in July, players with average provenance at best, is going some even for BFC.

Well summed up Jay. This pre season is starting to get very worrying.

Today's news of two youth loans has made me give even less of a **** about the coming season than I did yesterday. Which takes some doing.

I have three words for BFC at the moment:

    What...
    Da...
    ****!

What's more puzzling is that in the case of the two lads from Manchester United the Star is suggesting that the loans are for a month. Admittedly that's how Pearson came in the first place, on a month loan that was extended to take him to the end of the season last season but it still seems bizarre to go for loan players for a month long loan before we've kicked a ball in anger.

A youth loan can only be a month at a time, and extended throughout the season.

What if they are coming on loan, give everything to the cause and get us top 6 by Christmas then agree to permanent because they are playing in a team that's going places?

    Just a thought.

    It'd do me

Maybe it isn't a temporary loan to fill a hole (then we never see the player again), but a loan with a view to a permanent move to build a squad.

So we let Turnbull and Lalcovic both go on free tranfers, offload Oats
look set to sell Holgate for 20% of what we sold Stones for
and are building the spine of the team on loans

    Perfect summer isn't it

hopefully when we are top of the table at Easter we will wonder what the fuss was about, but at the moment I am a tad concerned

Nyatanga, Mawson, Pearson, Scowen, Hourihane and Winnall will be the spine of the team and there's only Pearson that's on loan from that lot.

I agree it's slightly worrying that we have 3 loan players already though.

I think the plan as always been to bring in 4/5 loan players closer to the start of the season, once we'd signed the players we want on 2/3 year deals, but because we're still struggling to get them players on the right deals for the club, the loan signings are being brought in earlier so we can field teams in friendlies.

According to Giddings they're six month loan deals. If that helps anyone feel slightly less worried!
I'm not getting too stressed about the whole thing.

He got it wrong and Tweeted the following later :-

To clear up the confusion for some of you, it would appear that should the #mufc players join #barnsley they will sign yth loans. (Cont..)

Andy Giddings ‏@Gids1980 4 hours ago Sheffield, England
You can only sign yth loans for a month and then keep refreshing the loan for as long as the two clubs agree to keep it going. (Cont..)

It's a looser arrangement that for younger players suits all parties. They are opened in effect an not subject to usual loan rules.

Ahh one month it is then. Well it least if they don't perform we can send em straight back. Every cloud and that!

Top and bottom of it is we don't know what the plan is. So many variations on so many themes. It's about trusting the management team to do what they think is necessary. They want to make a success of this . We want them to. No matter how much we speculate we'll not get to know what's going on in Lee's head until the start of the season. Trust is key. Trust the guy to do the job. Let's go into the new season as fans with an optimistic and positive approach rather than damning everything that's happening right now with insufficient evidence of what's really going on. We're rebuilding (again).....this time it might just work.
