It's over two years since the club's last met and in that time there have been changes in managerial personnel and almost total changes in playing staff. However, the fans stay the same and the fans of the Rovers will look back with fond memories of the last five competitive meetings in the new millenium. But today is a new ball game and three points are a prized reward as both teams, second and third from the bottom of the Championship, need the points to kick start their season. The Rovers made three changes from the side that started in the midweek defeat against Sheffield United. James Coppinger, Gareth Roberts and Lewis Guy replace Mark Wilson, Jason Price and Darren Byfield. The Rovers defended the Kop end in front of their travelling support. A cagey opening five minutes was followed by Hume, for the home team, getting to the left byline and squaring the ball into the middle but Sullivan intercepted at the near post and held the ball. A couple of minutes later and Guy had the ball in the Barnsley net but offside was given against him. Then, on 10 minutes, a cross from the Rovers left to the far post saw Guy jumping for it but bundled into the net. Penalty said the referee and STOCK duly stepped up and slotted a low shot into the keepers right hand corner despite the giant Muller diving the right way. The next ten minutes, with Barnsley trying to get back on terms, the Rovers controlled the play so that most of the play was in midfield. In fact, it was the half hour mark before Barnsley got a strike on goal when Leon tried his luck from 30 yardsbut put wide. A minute later woods , for the Rovers, showed him how to get on target when his twenty yarder was punched away by the diving keeper. From the nresulting corner Mills put his header straight into the keeper's hands. A couple of minutes later Kozluk had a low drive from 25 yards pushed away at full stretch by Sullivan, who followed this by catching the resulting corner. A good run down the Rovers right by O'Connor brought a terrific cross for the onrushing Guy but Moore got in a timely interception to head out for a corner to the Rovers. Six minutes from the break and a free kick from the Barnsley right was met by a good header from Souza that brought another diving save from Sullivan, who tipped it away for a corner. De Silva was then high and wide from 30 yards as Barnsley pushed on. But the break came with the Rovers going in with their one goal lead. The second half began with the Rovers taking control of the game and attacking from the start but Muller in the Barnsley goal wasn't unduly troubled. Four mi nutes in and Wellens put Guy through the middle only for Moore to haul him down. Moore was sent off with the free kick coming to nothing for the Rovers. This setback seemed to galvanise the home team more than the Rovers. On 54 minutes Barnsley were awarded a free kick on their left. FOSTER got in a tame header that somehow rolled over the line to put the home team level. On the hour a chip shot from Wellens was caught by Muller. But seconds later at the other end CAMPBELL-RYCE hammered in a shot from just outside the angle of the penalty area on the Barnsley left that bounced over Sullivan's dive and into the far corner of the net. Five minutes later and the Rovers won a corner which Lockwood headed over. But Barnsley had their tails up and on 74 minutes, MACKEN, within seconds of coming on, slotted in after Sullivan pushed out a shot from Hume. The Rovers, despite their numerical advantage found themselves under the cosh. Coppinger had a stinging drive beaten out by Muller after 80 minutes but six minutes later HUME rifled into the top corner from 25 yards The home team ran the show to the final whistle running out winners by four goals to one having scored all four goals after going down to ten men.
