Just had a quote for £5.5k for 6 windows, set of French doors and a composite front door. Not that I've anything to compare against, seems a bit steep. Anyone with any advice?
get some more quote mate, its the only way you are going to see what they are charging in that neck of the woods.
as has been said before - get plenty of quotes. Try this fellow - Jason @bandpwindows B and P Windows, Wakefield. 0800 146 551. Top notch stuff. Whoever you go for though make sure their installers are MTC compliant (http://www.glassnews.co.uk/?p=1229)
When I lived in Suffolk, it worked out much cheaper to buy my windows and French doors from Roundbrand at Stairfoot, hire a van, come and collect them, then get them fitted, than any local quotes I received.
Either do what Gimson has suggested above or get a quote from these: Low Cost Window Co 122 Doncaster Rd, Barnsley, South Yorkshire, S70 1TP Tel: 01226 785007 *Edit* Just realised you're in Norfolk, what with the name and everything. I'm sharp like that. Clearly the above information is useless to you.
As usual you pays for what you get. French doors are notorious week points for burglaries...Make sure these are good quality with proper locking points. Check your openers and how they open and again locks and handles on these can be varied in quality and cost. Composite front doors used to be a bit of a profit maker - but I'm not sure these days....maybe worth getting it quoted separate and check other types of doors. At the end of the day though - it's just plastic - glass and metal. I paid about the same - probably a bit less for 9 windows and 2 doors 11 years ago - but they are again top stuff.
A few years back, I got a quote for a conservatory, which was errrrm shall I say "a bit steep". So I told them.... they never called back. must be plenty of people who pay it then. Always say "It's too much" and see what they say.
friend of mine used to be a Double glazing salesman.. he gave me this top tip tell the guy who quoted you that you will think it over ...then leave it, he will within the week come back with a lower quote...think that one over, then his area manager will come in with an even lower "Managers Special" quote. He worked for CR Smith they are or were one of the TOP DG firms in Scotland. He told me they will always try it on as many will accept the first quote as gospel... they have a very wide margin for haggling apparently... the salesman is told his base price to obtain his commission, anything above then he gets more and more commission, apparently that's how they work.
