Driving to that there London on Friday evening about 4:30. Anyone driven down lately ? Are the road works on M1 as bad as folk have told me? And would A1 be easier /faster ?

M1 is a nightmare Chesterfield and Northampton, if you go that way leave plenty of time for the journey.

The roadworks are an absolute nightmare and there are a few sets on the way down to the M25 (which isn't much better). I was down there last month and the journey took about an hour longer than anticipated but this did include a minor bump on the hard shoulder near the M69.

Actual London? I go to ease Sussex a lot and always do A1 and avoid m1 completely. Depends where you are heading gets you to m25 less painfully

A1 would certainly be less stress, and flow better right now. That will give you the feel of progress. It will still only be marginally faster time wise. By that I mean 30 mins. But it is also a bit more pleasant than the M1 too.

    4.30 pm on a Friday....

I would allow at least 6-7 hours to get to London at that time, whichever way you are going. If you can set off earlier I would.

Had this argument other day, I reckoned the M1, my mate was adamant that the A1 was better - I've been in many more ridiculous jams on the A1 (ie the ones where you don't move for half an hour) than on the M1 and I hardly ever use the A1 unless I'm going to Norfolk.

Used both ways over the last couple of weeks, both are shocking at the time you are going, just allow plenty of time, get yourself in the mindset that you are going to be delayed and just relax and go with the flow. I returned on the Sunday and it was a different story, straight through.

my experience is that on a Friday night the heavy traffic is moving from South to North up the M1.

setting off at 4.30 I'd take a chance and stick to the M1

I'd go A1 if I were you. M1 is a nightmare with all the roadworks. A1 isn't great but it's better. South to North shouldn't be too bad, I drive north every other week on a Friday and it's *****.

If you going via Sheffield go into the Tap and get a couple of carton carry outs
