is it possible to learn to drive with points on a povsional liscence? ar lass younger brother managed to clock some up on a scooter, think the little tat has 9 though 3 are due off in the summer.

i mean i think he would fail or be banned straight away anyway but i said i would try and find out. any ideas? other than tell him to stay off the road?

If you have just passed your first driving test, congratulations! But you must remember you are "on probation" for the first two years. If you clock up six or more penalty points during that time you will lose your licence and go back to being a learner. You will have to reapply for a provisional licence and take both the theory and the practical driving test all over again.

From Cornwall & district police - same applies thorughout country though....

Think he'll have to do his CBT again, and he may have probs booking a test.

    The answer

He can take his driving test and pass it with 6 or 9 points on his licence.

BUT.....upon passing if he gets ONE more point or more on his licence within the first two years he would revert to being a provisional licence holder again and have to take both his theory and practical test again.

His he a good tightrope walker???

To insure a just-passed male driver with 9 points on his licence will require a remortgage.

Dunno why young males are still rated higher risk - anybody else noticing there seem to be more and more pushy, aggressive young female drivers around these days?

    thankyou all

i thought that would be the answer, so he can do it just one thing wrong and he is done for though. Might be worth him passing and not getting a car then to get through the probation period and wait until the points come off the liscence

its disgusting the way young male drivers are treated by insurance companies, after all young people have all there facultys good eye sight faster reactions but some doddering old 80+ year old pays much less insurance.
and dont give me that they are safer drivers, cos they arent, if you consider the amount of miles they drive compered to younguns. most old drivers are a danger IF they get on the motorway and how far do the travel in the car each week 2 or 3 miles to do the shopping?

You don't 'alf talk some ****** mate...

..although insurance companies do make yer laff.... My 19 yr old daughter has just passed her test. I got a quote for TPF&T on a 1.0 VW Polo insured only to drive. Then I got a quote for me and the missus as additional drivers. They wanted another 50 quid. If my missus only was added it would actually be 20 quid cheaper than insured only... I asked them why it was dearer with me on the policy.. "You are a male came back the reply". "Yerbut I used to be a qualified driving instructor with 30+ years driving experience and my wife is a teacher with less experience". "Yerbut she is a female" came back the reply..."lower risk.."
    I give up!!
Actually older drivers are safer. Young drivers may have faster reactions but they need them since, unfortunately there is no substitute for experience. the longer you drive the more you realize that. A good experienced driver knows automatically where the hazards are. Most experienced drivers would score highly on the hazard perception test compared to young inexperienced drivers. Oh and young males have an over inflated opinion of their own ability behind the wheel.
Good Car control alone doth not a driver make!!

****** me? go for a drive with my 81 year old uncle or my 25 year old son see which one you think is the safest driver, both of them have been driving since they were 18. experience means nothing when at 81 he cant even reverse his car up the drive without running onto the lawn because he cant turn his neck round far enough to see.
btw my uncle used to have his psv my son as a his lgv

he cant see right but drives without glasses (i was once with him when he pulled out in front of a bus and said i never saw it) yet his insurance is less than £200 but my son still pays about £550 and they tell him even though he as his lgv they do not take that into consideration.
