Its too excessive.

Road tax £30, fine £40 [IMG]

Imagine if it was a water bill you forgot to pay lets say£300 and you got a £400 fine and still had to pay the bill, even though you havn't used any water....

They can **** anyway , its tax excempt for me from now on I'll recoup my losses within 14 months. Then I'll be putting nothing back in ever again, their loss.

Well a fine for non-payment SHOULD be more than what you haven't paid otherwise where's the incentive to pay?

If it's in storage all you have to do is notify them that it is off the road....there isn't a payment for this, however if you fail to notify there is now a fine....it's an attempt to clamp down on people using vehicles on the road but not taxing them.

You just have to declare it's off the road.

Don't you get the fine reduced if you re-tax it within 14 days of receiving the fine or summat? Pretty sure it works like that - have a check......

Its not the money that bothers me tbh, its the principle,

Its been in storage now for a good 6 months and out of Tax for 2 months but I got a fine for not filling in some pissy piece of paper telling them that I wasn't useing it....Is that right, I didn't tell them that I wasn't useing it?

I could understand If it was a trashed out car parked on the road,or If I had been useing it on the road, but its not, its wrapped in blankets in my garrage.

I booked it in for MOT last week to take it next wednesday because I fancied a weekend away soon with it and the fine dropped through letter box this morning.I was going to Tax it again at the local PO , but fek em I'm going tax excempt. [IMG]

rant over...have we signed anyone yet?

Wheres the principle? All you had to do was inform them it was off the road, you wouldn't have had to pay anything.

Instead you are bleating because, under the law, you are being fined - the law has stood like that for long enough and been well publicised...it's clear if you read your road tax renewal notice.

Just pay the fine and move on.

but it has been very well publicised

We don't have to look here to see if your car is taxed.... etc.

Have you not seen the several million advertisements on TV saying that if your car is off the road then you have to complete a SORN document?

It is there for a reason and that reason is to save everybody a lot of money.

If your car tax ran out two months ago then you should have completed the document and notified them that it is in storage. Notices in newspapers, TV advertisments, Radio announcements and posters/ billboards have all told you that it is the procedure that has to be followed.

Sorry to say, but agree with Eastender on this.

If it's been out of tax for 2 months, I fully understand with the DVLA for sending the fine. How are they to know you have it 'off the road'?? That's why they state clearly on the reminder, that you need to make them aware of this.

I'm aware of the procedure now, but it was off the road in storage for 15 years and I never heard a thing from the DVLA in that time. Apparently it only applies to vehicles if taxed after 98, which I didn't know and because I taxed it last year it now applies to me.

Seems to me I'm been punished for something I haven't done.

They change the laws to suit themselfs. They used to catch people on the road without tax last time I drove.

If I have no road tax and had the veihcle on the road, surely it should be a case for the police to prove, and not some assuming government department.

Why do we pay road tax anyway? nobody else in Europe does.

I thought we were supposed to be coming in line with Europe or is it just laws that benifit this government.

    Rant well and truely burried..anyway

    Thanks all for you advise..[IMG]

    good point well made

Break the law because it's their loss and obviously their fault that you didnt complete the simple form that would save you paying a fine.

Think about it logically, the SORN form is there to save everybody money because less money is wasted chasing people who don't pay their taxes.
