Oh OK, I was just going the name of their ground, The DW Stadium. Wondered if there was any connection.
All it tells us is that Dave Whelan got out of 2 organisations before they collapsed. BBC News North West - DW Sports, which was founded by Wigan Athletic's former owner Dave Whelan, is to go into administration, putting 1,700 jobs at risk. It's blaming Covid-19. It had 73 gyms and 75 stores but announced it was closing 25 shops last month. Efforts will be made to find a buyer.
It probably makes Wigan Athletic's death more likely, because Whelan - the one most likely to buy them, I'd say - is probably not in a position to do so. It has no bearing at all on tomorrow's events, though.
He is listed as a 'key person' on the DW Sports Fitness Wikipedia page. But Wikipedia is Wikipedia...
They're a well run gym though? All gyms lose money. All the big gyms are doing it. They must be able to appeal this? Or something like that.
"Were a well run club... we just need an owner wi deep pockets to pay off the massive debts we incur due to our totally unsustainable wage bill on crowds of 10k"
I wonder if a new sponsor will pay the same amount as DW sports did? Probably not a helpful thing to happen in Wigan's current plight.
Sad and unsettling times for the workers and their families, much more if this to come in the leisure & hospitality sectors in particular. Hope they can find a buyer to lessen the impact not only on their staff but also on all the businesses that supply them and look set to take a hit.
Scrap that. Just seen that the football club have majority ownership of the ground. Can see why the Lenaghan from the RL club would be interested now
Strange to close just a week after reopening!!! I bet they managed to restart the monthly membership fees last week.
