However with Bury aware that Mattis was unlikely to sign a new contract at the club and would be free to leave on a free in the summer, they finally accepted an offer from Barnsley. They will pick up £50,000 now and another £25,000 if the club stay in the Championship, while Bury will also receive 25% of any future sell-on fee.

Bury director Ian Harrop confirmed to his club's website: "The player would not commit himself to the club so we had no alternative but to secure the best deal for the player and the club as he would have left at the end of the season for nothing.

A fee of £50,000 has been secured, plus £25,000 when Barnsley secure their championship status, also a 20% sell on clause has also been negotiated."
