Irrespective of the morality around sports washing and financial doping of the game, it’s often been said that English managers are never backed by the top clubs. Who reckons that given Manchester City levels of spending that Eddie Howe can get Newcastle pushing for top 4 this season?
If they spend similar to what Man City usually do, it should be considered a failure if they don't finish top 4.
Not this season, I think the most generous Newcastle fans reckon itll be 2-3 years minimum before properly challenging consistently for top 4. They have some catching up to do, just like Everton tried to do, Chelsea did & what Man city did when they first got took over
So far the signings feel more like Europa league quality at best, maybe they are just getting the squad numbers up to start with?
Obviously there is a long way to go in this window, a lot of money to be spent across the PL and I don’t think Newcastle are going to finish above Man City or Liverpool. But if they finished above either Man Utd, Chelsea, Tottenham or Arsenal would that be overachieving?
Quite frankly, (Mr Shankly), I don't really give a monkey's. I'm struggling to support the club I've supported since I was 10 years old. Recent changes have given me a lot of hope. The Premier League is just a load of robbers & murderers backing teams, in the same way some of us go down the bookies. Not interested.
Yeah I understand that. It’s just a bit of idle chit chat and discussion on what is sometimes a football forum. Appreciate many people don’t give a rat’s derrière about Newcastle or the PL in general unless we’re playing in it.
I think Chelsea will probably be 3rd again, so yes I reckon that would be an overachievement. As for the rest hmmmm. I would have said no to being an overachievement for Manchester united before Ten Haag, but I think hes an exceptional manager and if he gets the right players will definitely push for top 4. Same with Conte at spurs, if he stays I reckon Newcastle will be below them, if not, it's up in the air on that one. Them & Arsenal are kinda all over the shop. Arsenal have spent a lot of money under Arteta and are so heckle and hyde. Suppose it's still tough to call until we see what players they do actually bring in
I think Europa League challengers feels about right, so a sustained Chanpions League push would be a massive indictment of Howe’s managerial ability. Bottom half and he’ll be gone by the end of November.
I know they spent a lot of money when they brough in Howe, but I think finishing 11th, 3 points off 8th, he did really well - considering they didn't win in their first 14 games!
I feel like it’s got shades of Mark Hughes at City about it & they’ll probably sack him at some stage for a bigger name even if he’s doing ok. As for next season I think they’ll push Arsenal & Man Utd & be in the mix with West Ham for the positions 5-8. They’ve recruited really well. The midfielder they’ve signed in January, Bruno Guimares is proper world class. A special player. Joelinton also looks top drawer as a midfielder. ASM is fantastic, Trippier top class as well & obviously has brilliant set piece delivery. Wilson’s very good if he can stay fit & Pope’s a very good keeper. The centre back they’re signing Botman is very highly rated although I’ve never seen him play myself & Dan Burn was outstanding for them. They’re probably only a top left back, 3rd central midfielder & another winger off been genuine top 4 calibre already. It’s not like Spurs are that great & Chelsea seem to be in disarray.
He is indeed a fantasic player, at one point last week it looked like he was going to join AC Milan. It's a fantastic signing for Newcastle if it does go through, which looks like it definitely is. I think they're looking to replace Wilson, although that Ekitike doesn't seem too keen, but they're in talks with Moussa Diaby & Broja apparently too. Their squad could be excellent this time next month!
