RIP Eddie. One of my boyhood heroes. A proper battling centre forward. Scored goals, fought like a tiger, always worked his socks off and never shirked a tackle. I so wish we had a young leading the line for us next season. Just looked back at his record for us. A goal every 3 games and my god, he created so much space up top. For any centre half's of the time he was a nightmare to play against. RIP Eddie lad. x
My abiding memory of him is the penalties he took. I'm not saying he took them all the same way but I remember him thundering the ball straight at the keeper, but above his head so there was virtually no chance of stopping one. Keepers usually go one way or the other anyway, but his shots were so hard and straight that the net was rippling in an instant. Proper centre forward.
100% agree and you're bang on re his penalty taking. Saw him fire one past Shilton in the 60s at Leicester in an FA Cup replay. As a young kid I was overwhelmed by the power of his strike. My memory is that he nearly broke the back of the net.
Always remember his 3 goals against Sheffield United in the County Cup (I think we came back from two down). If memory serves we sold him a couple of days later. Proper centre forward.
I remember the game at Leicester where we were robbed. Eddie scored a penalty which I think hit Shilton on the way out and he thought he'd saved it. I also think he hit the crossbar with an overhead kick which landed back in our half. Maybe it's the mind of an 11 year old playing tricks on a pensioner but I love the memories anyway. Went to the replay with my grandad and Uncle Wilf with Chippy Rowes More to add but this is about Eddie, not me. RIP Eddie, Everything we want in a Red shirt. Once a Red Always a Red
RIP Eddie. Will remember you always as a battling centre forward in my earliest days as a reds supporter.
We signed Eddie from Shrewsbury just before Christmas 1968. He made his debut on Boxing Day, scoring the winning goal from the penalty spot in a 1-0 victory. Against Shrewsbury!
