Anybody been? We're going up on the 13th for a few days, our daughter is performing there in a musical called HOT MESS, we're really looking forward to it.

I'm up later in the month (Toward the end of the festival). If you see anything good, please recommend it.

I will, we've picked a few comedians out and also Miriam Margolyes reading Dickens.
I'm sure they'll be plenty to see.

Yeah been a few times and will be back in a couple of weeks. Some of the venues are a distance apart which needs baring in mind if you have any tight turnarounds.

The pubs all tend to stay open a bit later aswell which is a bonus.

Oh, if you like one liners, find Mark Simons - I've seen him most years that I've been, and he's excellent.
Not usually my thing but Miriam Margolyes sounds interesting.

Went 2 years ago, saw Paul Sinah (the white suited Chaser). He was excellent even though you could see his hand shaking with Parkinson's.

Even if you don't see a show, the atmosphere round the city centre is brilliant, street artists performing all over the place.

I've been to the Fringe many times—unfortunately, it's not my favourite time of year.

Edinburgh is a beautiful city, and it's already crowded with tourists for most of the year. Then August arrives, and it feels like every unfunny lovely person* from London descends on the place, dragging their equally unfunny chums along, turning the city into an even more congested mess.

Don’t get me wrong—there are some decent acts tucked away. But as someone who's had to endure many Augusts working in the city, it can honestly be a nightmare.

That said, it's fantastic that your daughter is performing—I hope you have a brilliant time and that she gets a good crowd.

Personally, I’ve drifted away from the Fringe in recent years and gravitated more towards the main Festival. The only shows I’ve got lined up are the premiere of Mary Queen of Scots by Scottish Ballet, and Lyle Lovett at the end of August. I would have loved to catch Netherlands Dance Theatre again, but I’m away that weekend.

    Enjoy :)

To be honest if not for the fact our daughter is performing there, I doubt it would have entered my head to go during the fringe month, Edinburgh as you say is a fantastic city.

Keeping the theme of visiting places, has anyone been to the Hay-on-Wye book festival? My first book is due to be published and I would love to spend some time at the festival next May.

You'll have a great time. It's just me being a grumpy buggar and there's usually a great atmosphere for the revellers :)
