This week's heatwave proved to be the last straw, stirring Billy into a one-pupil protest. "Billy feels that the rules massively discriminate against boys in this kind of hot weather," explained his mum Jane at their home in Grange Cliffe Close, Millhouses. "He's been upset about this for some time - why shouldn't the boys be able to wear shorts when it's as hot as this? Shorts can be just as smart as long trousers." "Billy is on the school council and he brought it up as an issue last year, but no one took much notice of a Y7 lad," she said. To make his point Billy borrowed a skirt from one of the girls in his class - with an elasticated waist for comfort - and strode into class. He told The Star today: "I got a few taunts but I was all right as I think they were only saying things jokingly. "I'm planning to wear the skirt all week just to make a point. It was much better than wearing trousers because you get the air to your legs. The boys at school want me to keep wearing the skirt because they really want to wear shorts." Billy said he planned to take a petition into school today and get his classmates to back his calls for shorts to be allowed as part of the boys' school uniform. "In some ways it was a bit of a joke but it was also a brave thing to do as he knew he was likely to get quite a bit of stick," Jane said. "He tried to persuade his friends to join in his protest but they backed out. I actually sent in a letter to school last week asking for permission for Billy to wear shorts but he was refused." "We are getting to a point where they will allow pupils to cross dress but won't let the boys wear shorts.." Silverdale head teacher Helen Storey said: "The school did have a uniform policy and parents knew this. Shorts at the moment are not part of the uniform but we are willing to consult on any changes. "We realise it is very hot and we are taking a sensible attitude to dress. If he wants to wear a skirt he is welcome to."
