Tbh I forgot we were playing last night, in a friendly at Newcastle against Bosnia. It was a comfortable and routine looking 3-0 result, but some pundits have said the result was actually flattering and we were lacklustre etc. Well come on ehh, what do we expect in friendlies like this, just before a tournament starts. And what are we wearing, is that our awful new 2nd or 3rd kit?.
Fringe players getting minutes. Eze looked lively. Watkins looked out of his depth. Dunk is not international quality. Alexander-Arnold showed his versatility.
Yeah I have noticed Daz lol. And these matches against Bosnia and Iceland, are because we've got Serbia and Denmark in the upcoming Group.
To be fair to Watkins he got no service Palmer was playing for himself instead of the team unlike Grealish when he came on
But what can we learn from friendlies like this. After the impressive season he's had with Villingham, I wouldn't say Watkins is out of his depth. And as for fringe players getting minutes, what was the point in playing Pickford in this match, as he's surely going to be our top keeper.
Can't answer regarding Pickford as I'd have thought Ramsdale would have started. Maybe he will on Friday.
I really hope we get to see the so called 'shackels' taken off this time by Gareth, and that we get to see him use the talented players we've got, much more positively. However, Id be the first to admit, he's taking us further in tournaments than what we've seen before.
As long as we don't pick up any injuries. I'm guessing Toney will get a start on Friday along with Grealish and Maddison and possibly Branthwaite and Gomez.
How many of us are now really up for this Euros tournament ehh ?. We're not supporting Toby tyke the bulldog now, we're supporting George the big lion lol. I think Germany will give us fans a great tournament as hosts, and I'm really looking forward to it.
I thought it was a good run out to have a last look at the fringe players, can't blame Watkins tbf, they had 11 behind the ball and no attacking intent in the first half and a new, unfamiliar team didn't give him much to play with. Successes for me were Eze and Bowen.. who was the best player on the field. Grealish did pretty well when he came on, Alexander Arnold had a few good moments, as did Gallagher.. Palmer wasn't bad but no more than that. It wasn't easy to assess the defenders as they had little to do... I quite like Guehi but he gave the ball away too easily, Dunk doesn't look up to the required standard.
Think it was only Guehi's third start for a long while due to injury. And regarding Dunk I cannot understand how he got in the provisional squad ahead of Fikayo Tomori or even Eric Dier.
Think Watsons had 3 touches of the ball after 40 minutes. No service whatsoever though that first half. Few changes after half time and looked a little more lively. Still plenty of first teamers out too, Bellingham, Stones, Foden. I will say I thought Wharton was excellent when he came on. Every single time he got the ball forward, some lovely intricate passing too.
anybody who watched it ( I didn't ) expecting anything other than a glorified training session wanted their lumps feeling!
I can’t imagine Toney will go unless there’s an injury to Kane or Watkins. His recent forms been atrocious. I think if we had a big game at the Euro’s without Kane or Watkins then I think there’s more chance of Gordon or Bowen starting up top than Toney.
My main concern is left back. Apparently Shaw’s not likely to be fit for the start of the tournament which leaves us without a natural left back. I don’t mind Joe Gomez but if we’re going to play with either Foden or Bellingham on the left they’ll be coming infield a lot & we’ll be left without any width on that side. I don’t think it’s as big of a problem if Gordon or Grealish start on the wing but I’d still like the option of a left footer. In a 26 man squad there should be enough room for two players for each position & I would’ve taken one of Tyrick Mitchell, Lewis Hall or even Leif Davis
