Also they're in negotiations with Virgin and BT to see if they can strike up some sort of deal. Hopefully Virgin will get same as last time - free for XL customers, otherwise I think they'll lose quite a few customers back to $ky

Yes they have got Setanta rights, but will they have the rights to premier league football.

Didn’t Setanta lose them for not paying the instalment before the deadline? (rulez)

It remains to be seen how well ESPN will deliver it as a product. Hopefully they'll do a pretty good job.

PREMIER LEAGUE AWARDS LIVE RIGHTS TO ESPN
The Premier League has concluded the sales process for the live UK broadcasting rights formerly held by Setanta.

ESPN has been awarded the two packages of rights containing a total of 46 matches that were available for the 2009/10 season as well as a package of 23 matches per season from 2010/11 to 2012/13.

ESPN plans to make its Barclays Premier League coverage widely available across multiple pay-TV platforms.

As a first step to this distribution strategy, ESPN has reached an agreement for its coverage to be retailed by Sky to residential and commercial customers.

Premier League chief executive, Richard Scudamore, said: “The Premier League is extremely pleased to have added ESPN as a UK rights holder.

"They have a formidable worldwide reputation and experience in sports and I am sure we will enjoy a long and fruitful relationship with them.

“I would like to thank ESPN, as well as all the other broadcasters who submitted bids, for their professionalism and effort in engaging in our sales process at such short notice.

“The timescale of our process was tight to say the least, and it is to the great credit of ESPN that they committed themselves to adding Barclays Premier League football to their already impressive portfolio of sports rights.

“The speed at which we have been able to conclude this deal means that the preparations for next season will be able to continue without interruption and fans and clubs will have certainty over the broadcasting of Barclays Premier League matches for the next four seasons.”

Russell Wolff, executive vice-president and managing director, ESPN International, said: “Premier League football is one of the world’s most sought after sports properties.

"We are very excited to be working with the Premier League and expanding our businesses in the UK.

“This move demonstrates our commitment to British sports fans and our ongoing commitment to delivering football to fans around the world across a variety of media.”

Says in Mirror:
"ESPN also struck a deal with BSkyB which will offer the matches to it's customers at an extra charge, expected to be £5.
It also intends to clinchsimilar deals with pay-TV operators such as Virgin Media and BT Vision"
So guess it will have to be paid for to watch it

can't see them paying mils for the rights then letting folk watch for free. May be some sort of deal like the prem plus was i.e. single £60 payment for season. Be surprised if it was pay monthly basis, think that's what did satanta with people getting it for a couple of months then canceling. Can't really forcast income if they allow you to cancel after a month.
I'm hoping that they have a deal that ties it in with ESPN America, I'm suspecting they will as at the moment the ESPN America channel is part of the Setanta package
Setanta have also lost UFC UFC has terminated its UK and Ireland broadcast agreement with Setanta Sports six months early.
All forward mentions of Setanta have been removed from UFC's schedule of events and it is understood that Virgin Media Television's Bravo channel and new Premier League rights holder ESPN are interested in securing the rights.
