I've just been speaking to a mate of mine who's a mad keen Oldham fan. He's been telling me they're holding a benefit match on Sunday 11th of May for one of their former players Ernie Cooksey. Ernie Cooksey played around 40 games for them around the 2003-2004 season and was a hard tackling mid fielder who the fans took to for his 100% committed no nonsence approach to the game. He's been diagnosed with cancer and the outlook is grim to say the least. He's 28 years old with a wife and baby and after only ever playing in the lower reaches of the football league has never really hit the big time as it were. Bill Shankly once famously said " Footballs not a matter of life and death its more important than that" but as my mate told me about this lad I just thought, Shankly might have been a good manager but he was badly wrong on footballs importance in the scheme of things. I know this thread will disappear off the page like all the others but I feel better for putting my thoughts down Thanks
