I've read that only Germany and Turkey have applied to host Euro 2024. I wouldn't have minded England to host it. Euro 2024 goes back to the old format and not the spread over 13 host cities like Euro 2020.http://m.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/39211428
Wouldnt mind a Scandinavian country like Sweden, Norway or Denmark hosting it. Iceland would've been good as they put themselves on the Footballing map last year but sadly it's too small to host a major tournament.
We can't really host any major tournaments on that scale until the rules about EU citizens visiting are known after Brexit. We could end up having to issue thousands of visas for visiting fans in a rush.
eh 2024 not 2020 we will be well past any Brexit date by then In any case its hard to see any onerous visa conditions for tourist visas for people on European passports, at least I hope not or its going to be a real pain for those of us who regularly travel to Europe for business and pleasure. I can get in to Asian countries like Malaysia Singapore Taiwan the Philippines etc just by turning up and getting a 3 month visa issues on entry - It will suck big time If I need to apply for separate visa's in advance each time I wanted to go to a European country and they all had to do the same to visit here
I know the tournament is in 2024, but *now* we don't know what the visa requirement are (if any). There is too much uncertainty over the political situation and economical situation over the next few years to commit to anything major tbh. I completely agree with you over the visa requirements, I spent a couple of months last year working in Dublin and have colleagues working in Dusseldorf, Amsterdam and Stockholm. Jump on a plain, waltz through the airport and start work. Only thing I needed to do was register for tax, but I finished that role before I had chance to do that and didn't work long enough on it in the end. However, our government wants to end free movement, and I can't see a way to do that without issuing visas to incoming Europeans. At that point, the reciprocal will probably come into place.
How the heck do Germany get to host yet another tournament, surely theres some other viable names who would want to host it. I like the idea of smaller neighbours co-hosting like they did with Holland & Belgium, and Austria & Switzerland. And after what was surely a successful Euro '96, why exactly cant England, Scotland, & Wales co-host a euros tournament ?
You must be too young to remember that even before we joined the EEC, we did not require visas for citizens fof European countries, with the exception of the Warsaw Pact countries.
Nope. I had to get a visa for Poland in 1991 but didn't for the other 20 countries we visited in Europe (including Morocco) - although we didn't actually make it to Poland as my mates visa and passport got lost in the post. I don't think we needed one for Yugoslavia (Croatia now) in 1987. However, just because we didn't need a visa in 1970 doesn't mean that we won't need one in 2020. Last time I went to America, you could just fill in a form on the plane or at the border (I drove from Yukon to Alaska). That was only 9 years ago, but now you need to complete ESTA in advance. Rules change all the time, and as I said before our government is determined to control EU migration. We don't know how they are going to do it yet, but needing visas to enter the country is one possible method. If we introduce visas to enter the country, then the EU will probably introduce visas to enter the EU. They are already introducing a scheme for non-EU citizens to enter the EU anyway.
I can't see any Euro nation voting for England on principle, if we go through with this brexit nonsense. Which I don't think we will...
I believe that triggering A50 is the best thing we can do. It will stop disenfranchisement of the Leave voters, and at least we don't have Farage bleating about another referendum every 10 minutes. I believe people will get exactly what they voted for... which is significantly different from what they were promised.
What exactly did the leave voters vote for? As I see it they all voted for the UK to leave the EU and thats it. What exactly were they promised - other than the "saved" money would be spent on the NHS - only they werent actually promised that it was just a good slogan on a bus
Well, Boris did mention that in at least one interview too. He also said that the poorer regions with EU funding (Cornwall, Wath, etc) would keep their funding - that is drying up. IIRC they also mentioned farmers keeping their EU monies - that is also going. The official Leave campaign promised we would stay in the Customs Union and the Single Market IIRC and have a points system for immigration too....
Don't think you're right there mate, Mrs May seems hell-bent on it and she has a decent majority in the commons. It sounds like the commons will get a vote and it will be along the lines of "accept the deal that I've negotiated or it will be World Trade Rules". Which is akin to a gun to the head.
Poland did not become a member of the EU until 2003. I didn't need a visa for Yogoslavia in 1975 as a mater of interest, As you say things could change, but it's cutting off your nose to spite your face. The EU might do it with all their threats. However I believe that as the EU exports more to us than we do from them, they will start backing down very soon after we pull the plug.
How Turkey can be considered is beyond me. Their club sides are regularly involved in large scale violence, away fans often banned etc. When English sides visit for European games visiting fans have to be bussed to and from the stadium under police escort. Makes a trip to Moscow or Rome look like a cake walk. It would be nice to see Sweden-Denmark or perhaps Scotland-Wales-Ireland if not England. Germany have only just had a tournament but would be the best alternative choice. We'll need a fan-friendly tournament after the Russia/Qatar/European Roadshow farces upcoming.
