Well, now you can. Scottish Lowland League side, Caledonian Braves, are offering people the opportunity to become a shareholder for as little as £100. For that, you get an app where you can vote on many aspects of the running of the club. They currently have over 6,000 owners which has raised over £2.5m to be invested in the club. There's a great video about it here from a YouTuber I like:
I’ve recently become a shareholder in Finn Harps who play in the second division of the Irish League. My mother came from the area and we visit pretty often. I have never had the chance to be a shareholder in my own club.
I was once involved in a similar scheme at Ebbsfleet. Didn't really get involved though as it seemed a bit of a mess the bigger it got.
My colleague is a shareholder at Newport County. He loves the fact that they're fan-owned but readily admits it severely limits their potential for any sort of progress.
I guess the ceiling in English football is much lower than in Scottish football. I reckon the level of investment they've received already could potentially be enough to take them to at least the 3rd tier in Scotland, given there are teams in the 4th tier which I think even aren't full time.
"for as little as £100" Which suggests to me that £100 is the smallest share option available but an individual can buy more if they choose.
