Excel formula help

I need to be able to count the occurance of a certain character IE

I need to auto-generate how many times 'N' appears in that sequence and do so across the sheet. Anyone any idea? I've searched online and all I can find is how to count the number of certain characters in one word/cell.

But would you be able to have some hidden cells that are counting how many times N appears in individual cells (like you say you can do) and then have a cell that adds up the sum of the others?

I'm not sure. What I've found kind of hints to how many characters in a cell, not to count how many times a certain character appears in a sequence. If that makes any sense what so ever.

I wish you could =SUM for characters and not only numbers.

 

One solution is the following formula, substituting the range of cells you want to check:

=COUNTIF(range,"=N")
