    Where`s Blatter`s Outrage Now Then?

"You have to have respect and what we witnessed there has nothing to do with football. This is to destroy another player, and that is not the aim of our game. Such players should not only be suspended for a certain time, they should be banned until they have realised they have done something absolutely wrong."

Those were Sepp Blatter's comments after Martin Taylor's mistimed tackle on Eduardo left the Arsenal striker with a horrendous leg injury. Oddly enough, we are yet to hear the FIFA President's opinion on Chris Morgan's elbow that left Iain Hume with a fractured skull despite his 2006 comments that the use of the elbow was the "new devil" of football.

There can be no-one outside of Sheffield who can watch those two incidents and believe that Taylor's motives were worse than those of Morgan. One is a genuine though poor attempt to challenge for the ball while the other is - well, watch it - it's not in the same ballpark.

And yet while Taylor received a three-match ban (which Blatter threatened to over-rule and extend) because his offence was correctly judged as a red card offence by the referee, Morgan has received nothing but a yellow card - a fifth of a one-match ban.

Is there any doubt at all that if Morgan had elbowed Cristiano Ronaldo or Cesc Fabregas or even Ji-Sung Park in an FA Cup tie and caused permanent damage, Blatter would have been giving the FA carte blance to punish him with the kind of ban imposed on Ben Thatcher? But this is the Championship. Do you think Blatter has even heard of the Championship?

So the FA hide behind their subservience to FIFA in announcing their impotence in the Morgan case because the victim is not high profile enough for them to risk a challenge to Blatter's directive. What are they scared of? What would FIFA do to them if they upgraded the yellow card to a red? Apart from say 'Iain Who?', that is.
