    Same here...

Nearly got clipped by a couple of lorries going about 50-60mph overtaking everyone. Seeing people in Corsa's (the same car as mine) overtaking at the same speeds was absolutely mental, considering I lost grip a couple of times.

I think we spotted about 3 that had spun on the hard shoulder, and a total of about 7 accidents on the way back.

I've also never driven in those kind of conditions, and it was horrendous. Truly horrible experience, hope I don't have to do that too often in life.

Its very difficult... coming back from Millwall last year.. Lorry drivers generally think they own the road...

That could be because they are the ones that have got the experience in driving in those conditions.
Trust me on this, most trucks get stuck in snow because of idiots in cars not knowing what the hell to do.
I know because its my job to drive one of these trucks, the ones that get things to the shops in all weathers, the ones that get fuel to petrol stations so people can get out and about .
Its not an easy job, but it is made more difficult by other car drivers not having a clue!

Yeah I agree with that, I had 17 hours of driving around yesterday got stuck twice due to cars trying to drive up Littleworth Lane at Monk Bretton and ended up locking up the wheels due to some idiot panicking and slowing down to a virtual crawl once they saw the gritter in their rear view mirror.

People don't seem to realise that it takes alot longer to stop on snow when your vehicle weighs 18 ton

    Winter tyres!!!!

Should be fitted every winter, regardless of whether or not there is snow, as soon as the average daytime temperature hits +5.

17 hours driving !! good luck in court when you have an accident
not sure that the working time directive would help on that one

Classed as emergency works and if you have a 15minute break every 4 hours the working time directive doesn't come into it, plus I'm on my 12 hour paid rest upto 6pm tonight.

    Re: Same here...

Wagon drivers should be restricted to the inside lane with at least four lorry lengths between them and the vehicle in front. White vans should be fitted with speed governers as they hurl themselves down the M'way at speeds well in excess of 80mph. I think anyone involved in an accident on the motorway and found at fault should be banned for five years. The cost to the economy must be horrendous with all the motorway accidents by the many mindless drivers.

    Re: Same here...

See , I think all cars should be banned off the motorways during working hours, that way we would not have to put up with idiots racing aroung in the outside lane and then veering across to get onto the slipway to leave, forcing other drivers to slam the brakes on to avoid an accident!!!
Also there should be no cars allowed on the road with single occupancy, that would save a hell of a lot of CO2 emissions!!!:rolleyes:

    Re: Same here...

if you know that it takes a lot longer to stop then why !rent you leaving a much bigger gap? surely you should leave a big enough gap that when the idiot in front slows down (not you didnt say the even stopped, just slowed down) you can stop with plenty of room? its not like a gritter should be surprisef that the weather is bad, they dont send you out in glorious sunshine in june do they.

    Re: Winter tyres!!!!

Bad example set by government and local councils. They dont use winter tyres so why would the general population think they need to? Im sure if all official bodies used them then more of us idiots would follow suit.

Winter tyres are obligatory in Germany and you can be fined for driving in snow without them, and your insurance reverts to the minmum legal requirement.

When it snows, you just get in your car and drive off, even a foot of snow is no problem. You don't get blocked or stuck because all the other vehicles have winter tyres too.

    Re: Winter tyres!!!!

How much do they cost anyway?

Maybe the government could offer an incentive scheme for anyone using them? Or insurance companies could

    Re: Winter tyres!!!!

agreed. I fit them every year and wouldnt do another without em. Turns your average car from being like trying to steer a bar of soap in the bath to better than a 4x4 on summer tyres. Couldnt believe the difference when i first fitted them. only bad thing is you dont get stuck but you get stuck behond those without em.

And its not just in snow - grip is so much better on cold wet snotty roads.

    Re: Winter tyres!!!!

Mine are spiked, and cost 700 quid a set, but they're for very harsh conditions - ie driving on compacted ice. As far as I'm aware, spikes are illegal in Europe outside of Russia and Scandinavia, but there are unspiked winter tyres that are suitable in more temperate climates where the main hazard is black ice, wet snow and slush. They're much cheaper than the spiked ones, around 300 quid a set depending on your wheel size of course. The irony is that Britain produces the things but it's very hard to get hold of them as apparently most of them are exported to Holland! Nuts!
