    <div class="firstpara" id="ViewArticle1_divFirstPara">BY Simon Meeks
    FIRST day, first defeat and in any league you can't get away with losing on your own manor.</div>
    <div class="bodytext" id="ViewArticle1_divPageText" style="FONT-SIZE: 11px">So, there's the bad news.
    But don't go shredding that season ticket just yet.
    If any weirdo had turned out just for the second half. 'Oh, well 0-0,' they'd have reckoned. And the moan to the Barnsley management would have been: 'Time to sign a scorer, isn't it?'
    There sure were plenty of chances and most in front of Cardiff keeper Neil Alexander.
    Of course, the massive problem was that at that stage the score was 2-1 to Cardiff.
    Cardiff came on like big-hitters and got two goals inside three minutes inside the first half of the first half.
    You had to fear the worse. Embarrassment can too often be just around the corner from defeat.
    Cardiff were tooled up with 12 new signings in their squad after splashing the Cameron Jerome cash this summer.
    We knew all about Stephen McPhail and Michael Chopra.
    McPhail got stick by the forestload and played his normal neat, effective game.
    The lad, Chopra, hasn't changed either. Cardiff have a decent bag of tricks there.
    He made Cardiff's first goal, running wide right and conjuring up a killer cross which Joe Ledley had to just poke in.
    Cardiff's second goal was a glory strike, a top-notch volley from Steve Thompson, a player who overshadowed Chopra on the day.
    His manager, David Jones, was well pleased.
    &quot;If our two goals were scored in the Premiership then people would be drooling over them,&quot; he reckoned &quot;But we then sat back and allowed them to get the momentum.&quot;
    Brian Howard was the man who stopped the steamroller. His strike even topped Thompson's. Flicking up a cross from Paul Heckingbottom, the second touch was a bullet shot into the top corner.
    &quot;I had one in training the other week and I overhead kicked it but that went about 60 yards over the bar and nearly snapped my back in half.,&quot; he said.
    &quot;This time when I saw the ball coming I thought to myself shall I or not? I thought I could end up scoring the goal of the season and then end up in hospital but luckily it ended up in the top corner.&quot;
    Cardiff came again and it might have been 4-1 inside the first 10 minutes of the second half. Ledley smacked the post with a drive and Darren Purse squandered a penalty after Bobby Hassell tripped Ledley.
    Purse's hit was low and hard to the bottom corner. Keeper Nick Colgan guessed and dived left. He was right again.
    Barnsley boss Andy Ritchie reckoned: &quot;I didn't think it was a penalty at the time, I thought Bobby got a bit of the ball but he said he didn't so the referee got it right.
    &quot;Nick has always got a save in him from a penalty. I wouldn't like to face him myself, he's a very good judge at penalties. The season before last, I think he saved three in five weeks.
    &quot;He's got that eye of the tiger sort of thing. I've always got a sneaking feeling he might save one.&quot;
    Barnsley picked it up from there and Cardiff were rocking. Best of the chances fell to Marc Richards. By then Paul Hayes had taken over on the right wing from Martin Devaney and his centre left the striker with only keeper to beat. He lifted the ball beyond Alexander but on to the crossbar.
    Howard had a late opening but volleyed wide.
    &quot;It was another scissor kick and I caught it perfectly. I was on my knees celebrating but it whistled past the post - I don't know how it did that,&quot; he said.
    Time just ran out on Barnsley. They were losers but could take consolation from knowing they are by not out of place in this league.
    Ritchie reflected: &quot;Cardiff have got some very good players but I felt we pushed them back in the second half and the lads can take credit for that.
    &quot;The fans were tremendous, it was a good first-day turnout. They got behind the lads and it was just unfortunate that we couldn't just get an equaliser.
    &quot;I thought we looked quite solid then but they've got quality up front. Their two will cause many a problem for defences.&quot;
