Any recommendations for a printer that actually works with refills that aren't a complete rip?

if you going really basic just get the cheapest you can find. then it might be as cheap to keep buying really cheap ones as refil. just an idea i dont know anything about printer refil prices never had a printer.:S

Epson Re-fills are dirt cheap and usually inexpensive printers

Don't buy Hewlett Packard - new ink cartridges are very expensive and almost as dear as some Epson printers

Anyone tried that shop on Church Street

opposite the old College building, near Cooper Gallery?

Think it's called Cartridge World, they refill print cartridges

Get a basic Epson or something similar and....

... get your refills done at Cartridge World on Church Street (next to Barclays). Just take the cartridges down there when they run out and they refill them at a fraction of the prices other places charge for replacement ones.

Yes. I have used them for refills at half the price of 'new' ones. So far, no problems with print quality or ink quantity.

    I'd go Canon, personally

Epson printers are cheap to run because the print head is part of the printer, not part of the cartridge.  Downside is that if your print heads get blocked up through a few weeks' disuse, it means a new printer, not new cartridges.

Avoid Lexmark.  Cheap as chips but refills cost more than the printer did!

Some HP printers have cheap cartridges but others cost a fortune.  I like HP printers but you do have to check the cost of refills as they vary wildly through the range.

The best compromise I've found is Canon.  Cheap as chips for the same reason as Epson but seem to have superior build quality and print heads are detachable (ie can be cleaned/replaced without ditching the printer.  I have never had to do this so cannot vouch for cost effectiveness of buying new print heads but the idea seems sound).

    Right. Thanks all.

I'd like to use the cartridge refill place on Church St so this time I'll make sure the cartridges aren't chipped.

    Thanks again.

I'll give them a go when I run out then.

    Agree with Revvie

I also replaced the print heads on a protable Cannon printer years ago - cost about £20 which was a lot cheaper than a new printer.

Had to throw an epson away

Using HP at the moment - £15 for a cartridge thats supposed to do 450 sheets (we've got one similar at work and it goes for weeks without needing replacing - does over 100 sheets after it starts warning its got low ink)

Cannon or HP are safe bets - never heard a good word for a Lexmark and I personally wouldnt get another epson
