Two late goals hampered City's quest for a first away win of the new season at Oakwell. Colgan; Williams, Hassell, Reid (c), Tonge; Devaney, Howard (Healy, 81), Togwell, McIndoe; Richards (Wright, 71), Hayes. Subs (Not Used): Mannone (gk), Heckingbottom, McPharland.

Early strikes from Clint Hill and Luke Chadwick put the Potters two goals ahead at the break, but second-half efforts from Tommy Wright and Paul Hayes dashed chances of victory.

Defender Hill rose highest to give Tony Pulis' men a perfect start, breaking the deadlock after just three minutes with a firm header from close-range after Michael Duberry flicked on Peter Sweeney's corner.

Mamady Sidibe then saw a header drift over the bar before Vincent Pericard was inches away from connecting with the Mali international's dangerous pass.

Barnsley's first effort on goal saw Martin Devaney force Steve Simonsen into a comfortable save while Hayes' header flashed off target soon after.

But City continued to dictate the tempo of the game and deservedly doubled their tally on 23 minutes.

Sweeney's hanging cross was headed back accross goal by Pericard and Chadwick was on hand to cooly slot home his second strike of the season.

Sweeney fired over as City looked to put the contest beyond doubt after the break, but Barnsley hit back with Hayes seeing a low free-kick saved by Simonsen before Marc Richards lashed wide.

The home side's search for a route back into the game looked increasingly unlikely - until boss Andy Ritchie threw on substitute Wright with 20 minutes left to play.

The striker latched onto a loose ball and slammed home from the edge of the box with virtually his first touch.

And with the Potters still reeling from that, the resurgent Tykes piled men forward in pursuit of an equaliser and it arrived just three minutes later when Hayes nipped in to steer Devaney's cross past Simonsen from three-yards.
