Let's just hear the case against again because I'm still struggling to get me head round it.

The bloke was caught with the abducted and raped toddler in his car. You want him kept alive why?

    He also has rights

Just because he took away the life and rights of that little girl dosn't mean the same thing should happen to him. Two wrongs don't make a right you know.

Firstly - why do you start with a comment such as "pseudo liberal" designed to get peoples backs up - it's the sort of comment that you would object to.

    Onto the subject

It's not about "wanting" a particular individual kept alive.

Where there is capital punishment, it is for first degree murder, I think the case you are talking about is the toddler who was abducted and raped but I don't believe was killed (I may be wrong on this as I'm not up to date with the latest details) so you would not get a death sentence passed in this case even it we had it - or perhaps you'd like to draw the line as to where it was used.

I can see the argument put forward for the death penalty when cases like this occur. I wouldn't mourn the loss of such a person, and sometimes I do question whether we should have the death penalty but if we did, then it should be limited to mass murderers. But ultimately it comes down to the fact that I believe it is just wrong.

If you believe that taking a life is wrong and that murder is wrong, then it is also wrong for that to be done by the state - it drags the state to the same level as murderers. Someone, an individual, has to pass that sentence...another individual has to carry out the act. Someone has to live with themselves that they've taken a life.

It isn't a deterrent, in the US the states that have capital punishment have a higher murder rate than those which don't. If it was an adequate deterrent then you wouldn't have anyone on Death Row!

There are many cases of wrongful imprisonment, the whole appeals process takes time such that it costs more in the US to give someone the death sentence than it does to imprison someone for life.

Interesting looking programme on Sky One this evening called "Escaping Execution" - a drama based upon the true story of 6 convicts on Death Row who are innocent of the crimes.

Any 'rights' he had, he lost when he raped the 3 year old

Why are you considering the rights of the sick tw@t ? - did he take those into account when he raped the little girl - why don't we conside her rights and needs ?

If it's not possible to wipe them off the face of the planet, chopping their ****** of would be the next best thing. I'll tell you what, if castration was the punishment, there would be very few paedos around...

We're far too liberal. Human rights...what about the human rights of these kids and their families?

I hope that's tongue in cheek Martyn. You give up your rights when you commit the crime surely?

    But that isn't the law

He has a right to a fair trail and protection! If we were to differentiate for differant crimes then there would be anorchy!

His rights should be preserved what ever. The laws and courts have to have the last say or there would be caos.

If he gets off, he gets off!

I don't want to pay taxes to keep these child rapists or any murderers alive. Get rid of them.

I'm not sure if I agree with that... if murder was the punishment, there would be very few murderers around, eh? Doesn't work that way...

I hate to say it, but even murderers and rapists have human rights. You can't just throw them into the dungeon and do whatever you want to them, even if you wanted to. Locking someone in a prison for the rest of their lives should be bad enough punishment for anyone, and in fact it might be even worse than death for some people.
Well, I don't know anything about this incident that you're talking about here, did they also kill that child or what?

...but that's the problem Tomi...very few ARE locked away for the rest of their lives. They are allowed out in an attempt to "integrate" them in society. A fair percentage then go on to re offend.

Also as they act inhumanely, they have surrended their rights.

Why did I head the comment with a phrase like "psuedo liberals"?

To flush you out and give you an opportunity to run this stuff by me again. It's just as flimsy as I remember it. I did't believe anyone would have the neck this time. This little girl was taken to hospital with significant injuries which weren't sustained in the car accident. Just think about that for a minute.

Don't know why you felt the need to bring murder up. The death penalty should exist for THIS crime. You think mass murder is the worst thing anyone can do? You don't want anyone else to have the right to draw the line but then draw it yourself to satisfy your own personal criteria.

And then off we go with the old "what if we got the wrong man" and "who would carry it out" etc etc.

I'll reiterate. They've got the right man, caught him with the girl in his car. As for who would do it if you never believe another word I say believe this - give him to me and I'll gladly kick him to death.

If you notice, the "bleeding heart liberals" you describe tend not to be parents. Some are, but not many.

I know you would in this case.

But it seemed to be widening to capital punishment generally and so I just wondered if those who favour it would actually put themselves forward to carry it out. A crude rule of thumb like.
