The main student village where the halls are is in Cottingham which used to be an ok area. A lot used to rent around the Beverley Road area - pay more for a place with decent security though!!
There are a couple of major halls of residence in Cottingham. One called the lawns and one called needler hall. The lawns is miles bigger so good for social aspects. I lived in needler, an old mental asylum. The doors are thick and it's a bit old but I loved it. Much smaller so you get to know everyone there. After that you want to be on Newland Avenue. A load of it has been refurbished with new cafés and bars to make it more 'continental' and to be honest it succeeded. I like it down there. It's close to uni and town and has a bar called The Roots that's worth a look as well as a club called piper which despite being a bit run down is a cracking night out. Newland Ave also has lots of side roads off it full of student accommodation. Somewhere like Walgrave Street is perfect.
I lived in The Lawns for my first year. Was the best place IMO, the most social and great to meet people. Especially with the meals included if you have those as well. Good to go for meals with everyone in first week. Second and third years I lived on Beverly Road. Close to everywhere so was perfect.
Just to add to other posts, the Lawns is definitely the best place to be in the first year. After that, you can't go wrong being around Newland Avenue. Loads of student housing just off the main road, and you're a 10-15 minute walk/bike ride away from Uni. Similar distance into the City Centre as well. I'm going back 20 years, mind - the only cafe's that were on Newland Ave when I was there are the ones that did cooked breakfasts for 99p!
As previously mentioned the Lawns for first year or the university has some student houses they rent. Was actually in Cottingham/Hull on Friday reliving all my yesterday's. Beverley Road looks like it's changed a bit but was always a good spot. I lived on De Grey Street near the Adelphi and loved it. If you want any more details John PM me.
I live there now, I'm a final year student at the university. Lived at the Lawns first year which is superb, would highly recommend it. Such a good student community up there and always something going on. Second and third years have been spend on Newland Avenue, firstly Lambert Street which is rough as f'ck and now Grafton Street which is slightly less rough. I'd say that Beresford Ave is a bit nicer but Newland is the place to be for students because there's shitloads of bars, resteraunts, cafes etc. If you've got any questions give me a shout, like I said I'm still there for the next few months so should be able to help you.
