Stayed on the Algarve, about 60km west of Faro in a small fishing place called Ferragudo. Absolutely fabulous place. Lots of locals on holiday there, very few Brits.
Went to a wedding in Quinta do Lago last summer. Beautiful area, fantastic weather much of the year. One piece of useful advice I found was that they have Uber there and it’s extremely reliable and good value. Obviously if you want to go exploring etc then get a car but if you have a main base and just want to get to the odd place, Uber is excellent.
I stayed in Faro for a week but it was 37 years ago, before they joined the EU. It unbelievably cheap. Just over £1 a night for a room, and I can remember staying in a bar all evening and buying cigarettes, food and beer and the bill came to about a fiver. The currency then was Escudos I think. FYI. It's not like that now!!
Went last year for a month to Algarve, Albufeira, Wife stayed in Faro Hostpital, so i stayed in Faro for a couple of days, saw quite a bit of Faro not impressed, i wouldnt stay there if i dint av to, but thats my opinion. Enjoy the football, an av a great time.
Depends on the plan for the whole trip. I had a fair journey from the airport last summer and sure it was only like 30 Euros or something.
Ferragudo is about ten mins drive from my little peace of heaven, Carvoeiro. Had a lovely couple of days out in Ferragudo in July. Lovely little town.
Portimao is a bit of a dump. Seems to be overrun with Irish bars which is pretty much the last thing I want when I'm in Portugal! Ferragudo is literally across a little estuary. I'd absolutely recommend having dinner in Ferragudo then taking a water taxi over to Portimao for the game.
I copped off with a German woman called Geraldine in a doorway in Faro during Euro 2004 and consequently i highly recommend visiting. Hope that helps.
I stayed in Faro last January. Nice little town. Very nice cafe bar on the harbour that serves good craft beer. Irish bar is good too, that has good live acts on. Pretty quiet little place, but one of the few that has much open on the Algarve in the winter time. Some decent restaurants. Nice beach, that you have to get to via ferry.
