Saturday was a bit of a shocker. Took a mate - first time he's seen the reds - and I don't think he'll be back after that. I was sure it was going to be a 5-3-2 when I saw the line up. Golbourne at left mid is just an odd decision, espcially with Cywka, O'Brien, RNL, Jennings etc kicking around. Jennings seems to have good feet - he showed more to convince me that he's got some skill in that 5 minutes (despite falling over the ball) than O'Brien has in 3 years. The challenge seemed a bit silly - very disappointing to lose him all ready. Crainie had a good game I thought, not seen the replays yet though so I don't know if he was at fault.. Too many hopeless long balls up to O'Grady and even Daggers all game. They were completely isolated and never going to achieve anything. Mellis pushed out wide again was frustrating to see. Dagnall was ineffectual, partly due to the system etc but I also think a truly quality striker to play with ogrady would make a massive difference. Which brings me on to... Billy Sharp! I know Flicker has distanced us from him, but he would be the perfect signing to push us on to the next level. I genuinely think that with him on board we could be aiming for top half rather than survival. If we're not after him then why on earth not!? (waiting for somebody to say wages) Aaron Mclean seems a pretty uninspiring signing to me. There seemed to be more than 13,000 the other day to me by the way - surprised it was that low.
A new striker is a must for me. I like Dagnall's work rate but too often his first touch lets him down and he's muscled off the ball.
I admire everything about Dagnall'attitude and application it's just a shame he lacks either the speed of thought ofte sipped of foot to make an impact at championship level. We need a reinforcement with pace and goal scoring ability not easy to come across
Dagnall, like Perkins, 100% effort but stretched to the limit at this level... Ultimately not good enough if we are to be a mid table side...
Agree with all that although I do understand why Golbourne was played at LM. It's just to give us an even more defensive look down the flanks. Nevertheless, I don't think I'd have gone with it. If we're going to do that, I'd like to see RNL make the step up and play him at LM with Goldy at LB. He has been 'training as a wing back' this summer and has enough pace and strength to deal with full-backs and wingers from a defensive point of view. I wouldn't say its now or never for him or anything but I think it's his time to show us what he's got on a more regular basis. Furthermore I'm unsure what Kennedy offers, especially in comparison to Golbourne, to justify a seemingly regular starting place.
With Dagnall... he is what he is. He's never 'Championship' in my view but he'll give you everything. Similar to Jimbo, they're very useful squad players but I can't see us making progress in this league if they are to start on a regular basis.
Imagine a lazy dagnal?, he would be a terrible player. No pace, gets confused on we're to pass, the list goes on. But a can't help but love the guy! His commitment energy and never say die attitude. The lads a grafter! And us Barnsley folk love a grafter. Last year he was unlucky not to get more goals.
they all looked as though they had overtrained prior to match, fategue early on ,adrenalin may have been high ,high levels of adrenalin prior to match drains energy as well.
Billy Sharp would have done **** all Saturday. He's very similar to Daggers albeit a tad luckier in front of goal. You can't knock long balls into him and expect him to flourish. Both he and COG are wasted without men in and around them. IE Mellis/RNL/Cywka etc.
