Cheers mate... Does bring a tear to the eye, reminds one how much you love BFC (not that I ever need be reminded), and all the contrasting emotions that run through a football fan's mind. Also reminds everyone what a damn good go of it we made. I honestly believe that had we drawn that Liverpool game, which we had every chance of doing before Willard decided to w@nk all over our Premiership chances, that we would have stayed up. We'll never know.
Speaking of those whose conduct during that season left so much to be desired... Step forward; Alan Shearer... Supposedly an exemplar of English football (for me, read that as a cheat and a whiner, in this day and age) he did his best to manipulate the public and the referees. The season later (or two seasons, maybe) when we played them in the cup he was still quite happy to elbow, push and whine his way to victory. I’ll admit to being one of those traitorous lefties who, gladly and without question, put club far beyond country but I still fail to see, what with his cheating ‘n’ all, and how he did his best to f**k us over at every opportunity (not just us – any “little” team, Stevenage, for example, if you can remember Souness’ indignities about playing at their ground, echoed, of course, by She-Rah), what all the fuss was about. Or maybe it’s ‘cos I was brought up watching Auf Wiedersehen, Pet – I grew up thinking that the Geordie accent would always be a bit melodic and roguish; hardly the dull, monotone drawl espoused by that “diplomat of English football”. Imagine my disappointment when he didn’t sound like Oz at all!!! Or maybe it’s ‘cos I’m pissed…
RE: Speaking of those whose conduct during that season left so much to be desired... Top call and I'm one who follows England everywhere and had previously idolised Shearer but his antics in FA cup match at St. James' left me feeling sick. On top of all the things you describe I'll never forget him looking at where Adie Moses' was in relation to him from a throw-in in front of us in the second half, deliberately aiming a flick with the back of his head on to Adie Moses' arm, then collapsing on the floor writhing around holding his head. Adie got a second yellow and sent off. lovely person.
Absolutely brilliant, enjoyed all 4 so much Thanks for doing them Phil, really brought back the memories! Sad at the end, but seeing the reds fans standingtall, still singing,as we did after the Leicester game, and the final game of the season, can't help but feel proud. Great stuff
Forgotten how good Barnard was!!! Legend! & clips make stumpy look like steve gerrard class..... ..............
Nobody saw it when he did it to us But as he got older and slower, in the couple of season before he retired, people started to comment on it a bit (especially when he retired from internationals) I can't decide whether they were 1) Blinkered to it because he was an "En-ger-land hero" 2) He was getting slower, so wasn't as good at hiding it. I like to think it was the later, but I'm not convinced. I think people knew he did it, but didn't make to much of it - hence them only really mentioning it after he retired from internationals. If he'd been doing it for Barnsley, I'd have laughed my ass off every time he got away with it ...
I remember Keith Lodge writing... ... "Ade Moses was sent off for groining Alan Shearer in the knee" Brilliant!
RE: Nobody saw it when he did it to us That's the crux though, init? He wouldn't have got away with it had he played for Barnsley. I'll (reluctantly) accept that gamemanship is part and parcel of the modern game and that some players are more inclined to utilise it than others. As with most of the less sporting techniques in life sometimes you get away with it, sometimes you don't but Shearer used his status as England captain to buck the odds, typically against "little" clubs which, to me, made it even less acceptable.
