    Debate at will......

ive just read one or two interesting posts on the subject, past players refusing to get involved with community stuff and how appalled some folk are about the whole thing.
so i ask the following...and im not having ago at any one, its just a generalised question, wanting to create a debate and i suppose awareness.
first of all, we can all hide behind the word time
secondly, work commitments eat into family downtime.
Each individual as their own agenda in life.
Define the difference between your own spare time and that of the so called personality, who folk berate for not giving time up.
those that claim these personalities should give up their time.....Do you....if so well done if not Why not...
At the end of the day each and every one off us can give something back, its so easy to find excuses, not to

hardest part is to make the effort.
    Try to
the rewards you get from offering a helping hand ...........try it and find out for your selves.
but as the title says.....if you dont.

I haven't got much money but plenty of time so my biggest sacrefice would be money, where as someone ( Ronaldo-esque) with plenty of money but little spare time would be the opposite, that's the way I see it but I would gladly give time to MY chosen charity/benificiary

Well IMHO given that footballers in general are really well paid especially the £ per hours worked ratio I don't think its asking too much to put a couple of extra hours into community stuff.
To your average man in the street 'spare time' is probably a few hours on an evening and some time on a weekend to a footballer its probably nigh on 50% of the week

The obvious difference being that the average person works eight hours per day while footballers work probably 3-4 hours per day. And get paid glorious sums for it. The least they can do is thank their lucky stars and realise how fortunate they are and maybe put a bit back.

BFC football programmes have always shown pictures of our players at schools presenting medals,at open days at various communitys and always at the hospital. That includes players from last season, the season before and almost every year I've been watching Barnsley.I get the impression some bodies trying to stir things up.

I think the players should all be contracted to do x hours community work per week as part of their wage. They should know this when the sign. I dont believe any footballer cant spare 2-3 hours a week. No ones asking them to spend another 20 hours roaming around schools and hospitals etc

At Featherstone rovers who are part time, the way they get round having some better players on full time contracts is to have them on the community team.

There's maybe 7-8 players who do this. Part of their community work among other things is to go into the schools coaching and doing sports/ after school cubs etc.

The kids love it and the club believe its actually been one of the reasons they have been able to almost double attendances of over past year as well as bringing down the average age of the fans with much more kids attending which was becoming a problem.

also when my kids see the players in town, they think its great when the players say hello to them and call them by their names.

Theres absolutely no disadvantage to players doing community work

Last season you couldn't get some of the players to do any work between 3pm and 4:45pm on a Saturday, never mind working in their spare time!

I think the club needs to do more work in schools but I don't think players should be forced to do it. They might be really good footballers but hate public speaking. Assemblies are horrible to do!!

    Yep

Public speaking terrifies most people - those that aren't trained to do it - you've just got to look at the current politicians to see this - however EVERYBODY can do this self included - me with a stammer from being a youngster.

When all is said and done it is about comfort zones and in the case of footballers you only have to cite this - 'you are happy to pick up a wage in league 1 but can you do it in the championship?' - most will want to do it - ie get a better wage.

Well to me it's the same question - get out of your comfort zone and do it - ie go out into the community and talk to people. They only have two arms and legs just like you - and because you play football they will hang on to your every word.

    You will benefit from it.

    Honestly

    Rant over

Not asking them to do public speaking or anything like that. asking them to take a pe lesson, do an after schools sports club etc. doesn't have to be football either just a bit of running around :). It may encourage some kids to do a bit more sports or some kids to go watch BFC.

The community team at Fev organise tag rugby tournaments / mini olympics etc that must include boys and girls for all the local schools to take part in

There's far more to do in the community than take an assembly and im sure they could find something all payers would be comfortable with

Your average working person doesn't have anywhere near the spare time that a professional footballer does. During the week they train for a few hours a day, and then get rest days too. There's no excuse for them refusing to do it IMO.
