RE: that cant be true can it? Its true apparently. This site would get into **** if someone posted the full list. Ridiculous really.
it is and it isnt true The football league/premier league do claim to hold copyright over the fixtures but it has already been decided in a court of law that they cannot stop you from publishing them if you wish as the law only governs databases where the copyright holder has had to compile the database themselves and you are just stealing it while with fixtures it is argued that a/. ytou could compile the database yourself by phoning the clubs up and asking who they are playing on what days etc and b/. the football league/premier league didnt have to put any effort in to compile the database as it was compiled automatically when the fixtures were created. Or it's something like that anyway. Either way the football authorities ignored the ruling and continue to state that it is illegal to reproduce them because they know that by saying that and by threatening to sue people who ignore them then they can scare people into handing over the money. Or at least that's my understanging of it.
Its as good as true Fan sites have been shut down because of it. The problem is all fan sites are hosted on commercial websites The League has an annoying habit of sending a solicitors letter to the host full of legal threats regarding breach of copywrite so the Website is taken off air and only allowed back on once they have removed the offending copywrite material and given undertakings not to do it again. Supertyke correctly points out that the League are not correct however, Commercial hosts dont want a legal challenge, fans running fansites dont want to spend time in court so the league can ride roughshod over the law. Tjere was a brilliant dialog between a fan site and the league published on one fan site a year or so ago that perfectly illustrates this, I will see if I can find it and post the link - not promising though
Here is a typical examle of the letter a fansite would receive if they display fixtures We write on behalf of the Football Data Co Limited which is the appointed licensee of the FA Premier League, the Football League, the Scottish Premier League and the Scottish Football League ("the Leagues") in respect of the licensing of certain intellectual property rights of the Leagues, including those in the fixture lists for this season August 2004 - May 2005 ("the Fixture Lists"), for use by third parties.
