there are bound to be more floods in years to come!! Before people start crying global warming and all that, the more immediate cause is a planning system that knows sod all about planning. Build anywhere etc. Councils claim they are powerless to stop developments going ahead. Members of Barnsley Council have done this Well if you build on land, then obviously that land cannot hold water as it did before. It has to run off and go somewhere else, whether that be into new houses and roads or those that have been there for generations! It dunt tek the brain of Britain to work that out. Oh I wonder why we got floods?
it's not that water has to run into new areas not in Darfield anyway, water ended up where it always used to. Thing is at that time there was just a chip shop in a shed where there are now houses. They obviously thought that altering the course/making those small damns and gates into the fields had solved the problem of flooding in that part of Darfield, and while in all fairness they have prevented it for a long while, but that is still essentially a flood plain and when you get a lot of rain this is what will happen. well said Conko, because it will not be long before people blaim this on global warming
RE: it's not that water has to run into new areas But a months worth of rain in 24 hours in June can't be put down to where houses are built. It's a combination of factors. One of the worst hit areas was Darton village - how long has that been there?
RE: it's not that water has to run into new areas As I said just because house have been thre for generations does not mean they will not be afftected by new development. Until we get some common sense with planning policy this will continue to recur! Look out for Barnsley MBC building uneeded Private finance schools on flood planes near you! Would not surprise me!
