Following On From Breadcake v Teacake

    What do people call the following

    1) Two layers of potato with fish in between in batter
    2) Mashed up fish covered in breadcrumbs that is small and round in shape.

    I call the first one a taty fishcake and the second one just a fishcake.

    I went to the chippy on Dodworth Rd with Redstar and he asked for a risole when he meant fishcake. The bloke serving asked him if he was a dee dar and he got quite upset about it.

    Different chippies in and around Barnsley have different names.

    I've seen

    One I usually go in calls them large(1) and small fishcakes(2)
    Battered fishcake and breaded fishcake
    Turnover and fishcake
    Scallop and fishcake.

    Never seen rissole used.

    And as for scallops - as a kid my mum made them and that was just sliced potato in batter. We used to have with corned beef and mushy peas! Used to love that meal.

    Most of my chippy visiting was done in Sheffield

    and they definitely had risoleson the menu though i never actually knew what they were.

    Always have always will. Me and the wife and her family have debates about it all the time.

    Its the same as the Ginnell/Jennell debate for a passageway between 2 houses. I call it the first. Wife calls it the second. They havent heard of a corsey edge in Sheffield either.

    I'd call that a snicket.

    As EastStander says, a scallop is just potato in batter - no fish involved.

    It confused the missus when we went into a chippy, she loves shellfish and got excited saying "oh, they have scallops", and I had to point to what it was!

    A ginnell is a alleyway between buildings while a snicket is a pathway surrounded by fields or hedges.

    The second one's a fishcake and I've never heard of the first one.

    Scollop is just mashed potato in batter though.
