Rapport with fans Willingness to keep going for the cause. Max effort. I'm thinking Ferenzci; Ooh Gerry Gerry; Higgy (maybe) Knowing it matters to players means more to me than ability in some instances.
Some players are popular where ever the play others at just 1 club. So does it matters where ever they play? Or do they play for the money?
I'm not asking about personal faves but what makes a player popular all round. May noy be your fave but you do have a soft spot for them and no matter what their actions you allus will. Examples. Howard - favourite to many now seen as a Judas taking the silver Compare wi Redfearn - took the silver and ran when we needed him most but still adored Both ran their blood to water for the cause but differing outcomes
Getting stuck in and sweating blood for the club. The reaction from the east stand lower to Hammill's commitment in front of them in the second half says it all.
Cant think of a universally popular goalkeeper Clive baker was popular but had many critics, Maybe a few defenders and midfieders such as McCarthy, Evans, Futcher, Gray, Thomas had a great deal of support but the only players I have seen get almost total support have been reliable high goalscorers - Glavin, Ward, Hignet, Redfearn et al.
Not necessarily I think Payton got that and I wasn't sad to see him go the miserable get. We got promoted the following season too.
Yeah its the players who show they care as much as we do, players who will fight for every ball and give hundred per cent every game. Alan Little!!!!!!!!!! (clap)
an excellent thread alityke. The popular players 'connect' with the fans, not always because they are the best players on the pitch but because they have the ability, like all popular performers to 'connect' with their audience. The popular players are the ones who involve the supporters in their own game by acknowledging crowd support, by actually looking at the supporters. It's surprising how many players play the game as if the stadium was empty.
