The Football League board is to consider a proposal to scrap draws and decide matches by penalty shoot-outs, BBC Five Live understands.

The idea will be discussed by Football League chairmen and chief executives at a board meeting on Thursday.

No timescale has been given for implementing the change if the chairmen go ahead with the proposal.

"Why can't we just have a draw?" Bournemouth boss Kevin Bond told the Daily Echo newspaper.

The idea was originally put forward in the recent Football League Fans Survey.

There are currently two proposals to be considered - a traditional penalty shoot-out or where a player would have eight seconds to try and score after receiving the ball on the half-way line.

"I don't agree with it because I think it's too much of a radical change," Bond added.

"I'm very open-minded and I think certain laws of the game need to move with the times but that would be too much of a drastic measure."

The can't be serious surely?! (clown)

the powers that be have to justify their existence. A draw is a draw it can be a point hard won and two points thrown away in the same game dependent upon perspective.

I've seen some great drawn games eg Stoke and Southampton at home.

    The biggest surprise about it...

Is that Sepp Blatter didn't think it up...

    Or...

    Maybe he did!

The shoot out idea was tried in the North American Soccer League in the 70's. Emmm whatever happened to that?

The problem is there's a number of people working for the FA, FIFA etc who have to justify their living. They try to alter the game to solve problems that do not exist. The problems that do exist eg uneven distribution of TV money, high profile players/managers allowed to referee games etc etc are left alone as they don't have the balls to sort these problems out.

So if Barnsley had to get a draw at WBA on the last day of the season, played well, great defending and it ended 0-0, then our future league status would be decided by some pathetic shoot out? That really is worrying and I hope this does not get implemented as it would spoil football for me.

    Football League fans survey

probably just asked a disappointed bloke after his team had just missed a host of chances and drawn, but that's just how football is and I just can't see the Football League making such a radical and daft change. They have to discuss it to appease fans and let them think their views are appreciated but anyone could tell you something like this would ruin the game of football and drive away fans forever, or at least until the league realises how much money is being lost and in five or ten years time takes the radical step of re-introducing draws.

They did this in the old Yugoslav league I think - might do still round there even.

It worked like this, if you won the shootout you got 2 points for a winning draw, if you lost it you got 1 point for a losing draw with the normal 3 or zero points for a normal win/loss.

Look at it this way, at least English players should be better in the world cup shootouts!

    Garbage idea

So you pour men forward and grab a last gasp equaliser. Then 5 mins later after a few crap kicks cos you are knackered and mentally exhausted by the work in the previous 90mins you come away with nothing.

Arses to it, if it ever comes about (and I don't believe it will) I shall leave the ground at the full time whistle and take no part in it.

Stop fiddling with the beautiful game.

But you won't come away with nothing! if you lose the shootout, you still get a point! the winners of the shootout get 2.

    What a load of crap

its all about trying to get attacking football so no-one will go out and try for the draw

scores like 6-5 will happen cos there will be more strikers on the pitch than owt

They wanna stop messing with the game

    But

If you get 2 for a 'winning draw' and 1 for a 'losing draw', then I think it would encourage more teams to go for a draw. Currently if you draw you just get 1 point. This change means that you are guaranteed 1 point, possibly 2 by playing boring defensive football. One point per game average is relegation form, this would mean you could draw every game and still get promoted. Pants.
