I've just been browsing through a book which details our previous season's and i came upon the 1975/76 season when we were in the lower half of ye old Division Four. In our first twenty games we only won three (all at home), and our first away victory was at Huddersfield on the 20th March. We lost to Marine in the FA Cup, convincingly :'( , and 2,000+ was the normal home attendance. Plus; we sold a certain Mick Butler to Huddersfield for, i think, £25,000.

As the years progressed we eventually made it back "to where we belong" which was Division Two (Championship) and that, lads 'n' lasses, will suit me for an eternity just as long as we play good football and enjoy a dcent Cup run. We are the longest serving club in this division and it's summat to be proud of! If going up to the Premier means us suffering an aftermath of the previous experience then i'd be happy just to flirt with a quick up-and-down scenario just as long as we don't overspend on players/contracts etc.

    :)

Good post. That is exactly how I feel about it. I think the Championship is an exciting league. The odd season in the PL would be good though.

RE: Great minds think alike , mate

I got to agree with you there lad, Ronnie Glavin joined Mick Butler as my all-time favourite during my time at the 'well. Steve Cooper came close, but definitely not on a par with them, and i had a soft spot for Macca cos he went to Wuzbrer High.

Did you witness John Peachey's hat trick at Workington in 75/76? The official attendance in the book i'm looking at reads 894. And do you recall Ian Butler (no relation to Mick)?

No !!! dont agree............we need to be in the Premier League

And we need to be there at the least...........on and off e.g. like the Sheffield clubs
That is when and that is only when we will know the strength of the business that is Barnsley Football Club

So do WBA, Watford, Bristol, Charlton, Stoke, Ipswich, Palace, the Sheff clubs, Wolves, Southampton, QPR. The list is endless. In the pecking order we are way down at the moment. Without a massive injection of cash there is no way we can expect anything more than what we are getting now. There are clubs in L1 who would have more potential than us if they get promoted, Leeds, Swansea, Notts F.

    Excellent post mate.

More common sense in these comments than I have read for a long time on BBS. The Championship is effectively Prem 2 and has a lot more excitement, bigger crowds, better stadiums and better players than at any time in the 2nd tier's history. In many respects, the gap between the rich and the poor is narrower in this divsion than the Prem which only adds to the excitement and unpredictability of the league. And makes it a more interesting league than the Prem. I just dread to think what it would be like if we drop back to Div 1.

This thread has often been posted by myself.................AND

And the question has been put directly by me to Mr. Shep and Mr. Cryne

The question is this................HOW BIG IS BARNSLEY FOOTBALL CLUB ???????????
    I didn't get an answer
Because........................no one knows and this is because we have NEVER had a series of succesful seasons

Are we smaller than Wigan, Fulham, Blackburn, Bolton, Sheff U, Coventry etc etc ?????????? I would say NOT

    is Glynn going to Sarfend?

Can he manage the commute from his "salubrious" suffolk retreat?
