Why do players hold their fingers up and gaze upwards to the skies when they've scored?

Looking at the front cover of the Gillingham match day programme we see Watkins doing just that. Is he acknowledging the Lord for favours received or is it something to do with long dead friends/relatives?

Didn't Lampard start this when his Mum died? It seemed quite poignant when he did it, but since then as you say everyone is having a go.

Lampard did it but its been around long before him. Suppose you'd have to ask the individuals as to why they do it but I'd imagine most in remembrance to lost family members.

I seem to remember Steve Foster doing it after he scored the equalising goal at the Kop end during our cup victory over Liverpool in remembrance to his recently deceased Father.

Seems to be a football thing.

Never seen a cricketer, tennis player or athelete do it. Not even those wonderful Welsh Rugby players did it.

The legendary Bruce Dyer was doing this some 15 years ago. Not a new thing. Of course we know his celebration was very much connected to his religious faith. Just his way of saying thanks I guess...

So what gesture should they make when they balls it up?

Only two possible ways to celebrate a goal these days. Point to the heavens or the knee slide.

Totally unconnected, but is Bruce Dyer a Barnsley legend?

Never understood that knee slide business. On the one hand you risk churning up the pitch (as they often do, in wet weather) and on the other they risk serious injury. There are enough ways to rupture knee ligaments playing football so why risk it doing a silly celebration.

What's wrong with holding one arm up and wheeling away like Denis Law or Alan Shearer used to do. Much more dignified :D

I'd fine a player if he got injured doing it. Just stupid. It's actually quite embarrassing.

That is entirely up to you mate, I think he is, but as with everything, others have differing opinions.

I'd call him a cult hero, slightly different to a legend. He's become a great ambassador for the club/town too. So I can see why he'd be described as a legend by some.

Off the pitch, for his community work and basically becoming a tarn bloke, hats off to him. Same for Bobby. But he'd be nowhere near my best ever XI's. I liked him, and he did score a fair amount of goals but I put that down to longevity more than owt, he was here ages compared to better strikers we've had, more difficult in this era for us to hang on to a player like that.

I liked him. I think he's a sound bloke too, but not a legendary laiker for me.

I agreed. He's a cult hero to me. There's no set criteria though.

Yes. Maybe a level two legend but I think he's worthy of that status.
