Bournemouth are to hold talks with Barnsley defender Mason Holgate on Wednesday ahead of a £1million move.
However, Cherries manager Eddie Howe faces competition from Everton and Newcastle who have both made offers for the 18-year-old who has been tipped to follow in the footsteps of John Stones.
Holgate can play right-back and centre-back and has been training with Manchester United recently.
Despite his young age, Holgate featured 22 times for Barnsley last season and has shown his positional versatility on numerous occasions.

Taking the whole will he/won't he scenario out of the equation I think a lot of premiership clubs are sit up and take notice of our academy, which on one hand is good because obviously it's now beginning to pay off but on the other hand I'd hate to keep developing these youngsters only to see them leave as soon as a bigger club comes calling.

I don't mind Prem clubs knocking on the door with their millions. SO LONG AS we have moved on from the days of being mugged off and we get a decent return on investment in both the short and long term. That's the financial aspect of the successful academy.

The footballing side of the academy is that as me move on back up through the leagues, we will be in more of a position to actually hold on to them.

An academy works, simple as, and at this point in time it is being proven to work.

"Holgategate!" Doesn't quite trip off the tongue, does it!

Seriously though, a move to Bournemouth could break him. He'll more than likely be shoved straight into the first team rather than warming the bench and be ripped to shreds by world class palyers nearly every week. He'd be much better off going to a bigger club and being loaned back here to quietly continue his development out of the spotlight.

    I reckon it'd be a good move.

By all accounts Sylvain Distin is a model pro & someone he could learn off. If they stay up the squad gets even better & he'll improve with better players, if they go down he'll more than likely end up first choice in a division above us
