I have to question why the BNP have got in.....

    Is it;

    1. Voter apathy. Turnout was low, which either indicates that the real majority either said "none of the above", "I can't be arsed" or "they all **** in the same pot."
    2. Voter mentality and gesture politics. What they say may appeal to people who don't think before they vote or make a snap decison at the time.
    3. Giving a Labour a beating for the expenses scandal and the economic crisis.
    4. A genuine belief that we do have a crisis of immigration in the UK.
    5. 120,000 people that hate others sufficently enough to vote for their repatriation.

A mixture of 1 and 4 for the majority I’d say. I'm not embarrassed to come from Yorkshire though, its all part of democracy. My feelings are anger towards the main political parties for causing this situation through sleaze, ignorance and doing absolutely nothing to address the obvious immigration problem in this country. Talk about playing into the hands of the BNP. The main three should be completely ashamed of themselves.

The media should also take their part of the blame as....

they continue to peddle many myths about immigration that foster hatred and fear.

They sensationalise but most people know that anyway. The media don’t avoid making decisions on the issues which Labour are guilty of. I would never vote BNP but over recent years i have grown to understand why some people are voting for them when they appear completely detached from mainstream parties. If the BNP winning a couple of seats gives the ruling parties the kick in the nuts they need then maybe it will be worth it in the long term.

Exactly, The BNP are a bunch of tossers, but.........

immigration is totally out of control, this should give the mainstream parties an inkling as to the feeling of ordinary Joe that we see see vast amounts of people coming here and offering nothing in return, not all of course, but the majority of them.

The BNP will never have anywhere near that level of power or support although there are chilling similarities in the respective party ideologies.

    I agree completely.

The answer I'm afraid was No.1. People (me included), didn't vote because we are sick to death of the politicians. Therefore I, and people like me, must take some responsibility for the BNP getting in. And the person who was elected for Yorkshire and Humberside, is a former leader of the National Front.

Today, I am ashamed of myself.

The other thiing that has effected it is that this time it wasn't postal voting whereas last time round it was all done by postal vote. That affects the main stream parties and the labour vote in particular. The smaller parties are more motivated to vote. I think the BNP share of the votes was slightly less than last time (anyone confirm that?) but the labour vote was significantly less

Don't let the facts get in the way of a bit of sensationalism

An outdated voting system whereby thousands of people have to guess who to vote for

The system as it stands doesn't allow you to vote against a party which has led to thousands of people who's sole objective in voting was to ensure the BNP didn't get in have had to guess which party they should strategically vote for to keep them out. Some guessed at UKIP having the better chance, others at Green and others at a few of the other small parties. A large number of others selected 'none of the above'.

If these people had a chance to vote AGAINST the BNP, ie to say they didn't want the BNP in then there is no way they would have got in at all.

Only 3% of the electorate in yorkshire chose the BNP and that was enough to gain them representation. So 3% wanted them in, 97% did not. Something is seriously wrong with the voting system where someone that 97% of the population do not choose can still get in.
