In 1999/2000 when we got to the play-off final, we conceded 67 goals and finished 4th. Teams who conceded that many other than us were all in the bottom half (with the exception of Tranmere Rovers), but the fact that we scored 88 goals (9 more than anyone else) meant we finished so high up the league. Ok it was a strange season where we beat Pompey 6-0 then lost to Ipswich 6-1 two days later, but to be honest i think we have a decent back 4 and goalkeeper and if we had 2 good goalscorers up front and a goalscoring midfielder we'd be much further up the league.
Agreed It was **** watching us score a record number of goals, play attacking football , get a record points total for the club and get into a play-off final at Wembley.
RE: Agreed lol, well i enjoyed that year more than this easy! never forget that day in brum we cudn stop laughin at trevor francis
RE: Agreed great season, bassett was a decent manager and we played some fantastic football at times that year, just made the mistake of not renewing de zeeuw's contract would have been nice to have conceded a few less goals, may have gone up automatic.
Didnt Arjan leave when we were relegated from Prem? Therefore, leaving under Hendrie, who got rid of anyone foreign, regardless of ability? Leese, Fjortoft (who went for £150,000 despite signing him for £750,000 less than a year before) etc.
no played the season after under hendrie and was still there when bassett joined. At the time the barnsley fc website was decent and run by barnsley fc. they had a question and answer session with bassett where fans had a week to post questions and then the majority of them were put to bassett. my question was why did you not offer de zeeuw who is by fay our best defender a new contract. bassetts answer was that he felt we didn't need him as he wasn't good enough. he was sold to wigan who at the time were the league below us
RUBBISH! Bassett said "**** HIM", I'll sign someone better on half the money. Hey presto, David Tuttle
Im glad you cleared that up I couldnt remember properly, but seemed to think that he had left us when we were relegated. In regards to the arguement, I quite liked the Bassett football of that year, an enjoyable season overall. Whether it was down to Harry or the likes of us having Hignett, Shipperley, Dyer, Sheron (playing well), Curtis and Kevin Miller (In form) Hristov (in his two week hunnymoon spells when he came back from Macedonia) is another matter. Some great games against Man City, Pompey, Walsall home and Away, Sheffield United (how we didnt win there ill never know).
RE: no Bassett's period in charge reminds me a bit of Davey, in the way he was constantly slagged off and generally disliked by all despite our most succesful manager since danny wilson, being one penalty kick away from returning us back to the premier league, in the similarity to Davey I mean that they both had strange tactical tendencies that baffled the fans and that they both achieved the objectives of the club at the time (OK so Daveys was to progress - a target he missed by 3 or 4 points) but essentialy he kept us up again
RE: no i dont agree that davey kept us up, more like he almost took us down. we should never have been in this position this year
