Yes Proven striker in the championship (or Div 2 as it was then) - similar in some ways to Paul Hayes but more deadly in front of goal. Best Barnsley striker with his back to the goal I remember seeing
Ooh you cheeky boy! commentator on ITV when he back heeled it into the net one sunday afternoon. Classic goal, classic piece of commentary. Him and Aylott were yer big target man and nippy skillful side-kick personified. A proper deadly duo.
Perhaps my memory is fading but ..... .... weren't we in the 'old' 3rd division when Parker played for us? I'm sure we were in the 3rd division when he got crocked at Wednesday
RE: Top player....... got injured in a 2-2 draw at wendys november 1981, would have walked into our current side, signed by Allan Clarke early 1980 i think and made his debut away at Millwall also a 2-2 draw i think, formed a formidable partnership with Trevor Aylott, in what to me, is still the best Barnsley team i've ever seen!
They were great to watch ..... .... and we had some great players in Glavin, McCarthy, Evans, Banks, Parker, Aylott etc but in my opinion they can't be regarded as our best ever team cos we were on the (old) 3rd division at the time. Might sound a bit daft to some but I think our best ever team is the one that got relegated from the Premiership, on the basis that it was better than the team that got us promoted to the Premiership and if Wilson had put that side together a couple of months earlier we would have stayed in the Premiership for at least another season
Would walk into today's team However , his subtle skills would possibly not go down too well with some of our present day fans . The fact that he wasn't a 20 goal a season striker wouldn't help his case either . But , in my humble opinion , he was better than any of our present strikers .
Have to disagree... Although we were in the old Div 3 when we signed Parker, we gained promotion in his first full season and should have got promoted in 81-82 to the top flight, and imho would have done had Parker not got injured, can understand your argument re relegation team from prem, but i can't regard a team that was after all always losing, as our best ever.....
It's all relative though isn't it? ..... .... losing to the likes of Man Utd and Arsenal in 1998 doesn't make them a worse team than the one that was beating lesser opposition in a lower league in 1982. At the end of the day it's difficult to compare one era to another and I do know what you mean about the Glavin/Parker/Aylott team, they were a joy to watch and they were exciting times to be a reds fan. Wednesday fans shitting themselves about Ronnie Glavin every time we played them - pure joy!!!
RE: That overhead kick ...... Can remember Glavin coming on as sub at Wednesday and scoring the winner. Jack Charlton said the match started slipping away when Glavin started warming up.....they were indeed sh*t scared of him but so were most teams.
