i thought id let the performance sink in today before evaluating the lads.. its easy to go OTT in the immediate aftermath.. and so, here's my player ratings: . . . . . . . STEELE: made a sharp early save down low to deny Beckford. but i dont remember any other notable save that he had to make. but for once, he didnt have to. what he did need to do was command his area, and come for crosses. the parts of his game that have often been his downfall. but not yesterday. he came and got everything. nothing he could do about the goal. think Ian Willc`ock deserves a lot of credit too (8/10) . HASSELL: what can i say? another (probably the 200th) typical Sir Bobby display. grit, passion and drive. but calm and collected with it. im not exaggerating by saying that one of his tackles was reminiscent of another Bobby. Bobby Moore. involved in the goal. looked at home when moved central. won header after header in that last ten minutes (9) . McNULTY: looked uneasy early on but grew into it. got turned a few times but looks a lot better on the ball than i first thought. good vision, looks a better passer of the ball than JayMac. composed, and his crosses were more hit than miss - hence the wonderful 1st timer to make the goal (8.5) . FOSTER: a few typical stray kicks/passes aside, looked back to his best form of 3 or 4 year ago. always a threat at corners too. like Bob, won countless headers. expected him to struggle against their pace, but coped admirably (8) . EDWARDS: think he's looked spot on in each game bar Boro. he and Foz look to have a partnership growing. will be a big miss now (7.5) . DRINKWATER: a revelation. grafted tirelessly, got stuck in, and barked orders throughout. a captains display tbh. sharp passer. reminded me of Redders. fierce shot like him too. and did u see the technique, where he nipped in and out of two players? great home debut. key additional piece of the jigsaw IMO (9.5) . PERKINS: looks better central. busy, covers acres of grass, and made some great tackles. lots of off-the-ball work goes un-noticed. improves each game (8) . BUTTERFIELD: that was more like it from J. stayed switched on for more than just spells. great thru balls, and penetrated well, with a goal to show for it (8) . DONE: just really exciting to watch. his runs, peeling off the defenders, were timed to perfection. my favorite player at the minute. just love him. A WINGER, AT LAST! (9) . O'BRIEN: his best display full stop IMO. covered every blade of grass. great feet. good defensive work too, and WILL score goals (8.5) . GRAY: another best ever display. scoring was all he didnt do. TROJAN. WARRIOR. IMMENSE. chased and closed down like a teenager. JUMPED for balls more than ive ever seen. another of last years squad that Hillcroft seem to be getting more out of. my MOM (10) . WISEMAN: i like him, but i do worry that he's a bit tame/timid. he'll improve (6) . HAYNES: still unsure of him, but he looked menacing and nearly scored (7)
while theres no doubting it was a great display the real test will come against watford against a team we are probably expected to beat, show the same effort and attitude next week and we could be on to something good
That's all well & good Whitey ... but couldn't you have fitted all that into the title of the thread?!! Agree about Drinkwater Done & Gray by the way, thought they were great on Saturday.
