4-2-3-1 Meant we had a lot of possession. My only concern is that it does not tend to get enough players into the oppositions penalty area, but it worked, we got the 2-0 victory. If we keep working on the formation, the likes of Mellis, Shea and Jennings will get goals. Well done DW.....worked a treat.
If he brings in at least one more striker, which he says he's trying this week...that formation may change vs Blackburn.
It's the formation that Hemsworth has always advocated. And to give both Hemsworth and Danny Wilson credit, I thought we looked as good as we have for ages playing it. Hemsworth is usually like a dog with a bone when it comes to this, particularly if Barnsley play that formation and win. Strangely, we haven't heard a peep from him on the subject. I think he's conflicted as the person who he was warming up to be his next target has played the formation he always wanted, and played it well. Plus a couple of our kids got on the field. There's a WWE wresting match going on in his head. Unfortunately, I think Danny Wilson will lose it.
That formation works if the midfielder's aren't afraid to shoot on sight and if the striker gets into the 6 yard box to challenge the keeper when the ball is played into the box, which we haven't done at all this season. O'Grady got there yesterday, just once, and scored. The amount of times we get the ball in and around the 6 yard box and nobody on the end of it is unreal. There was another instance where McLaughlin did all the hard work down the right only for his inviting cross to float all the way across unchallenged because O'Grady, Mellis and Jennings were on the edge of the 18 yard box instead of getting in amongst the defenders.
i'm a big believer that any formation works, if you have the players for it. the biggest downfall is sticking with a formation and shoe horning players into it. especially when they're not good enough. i hated 4-4-2 under flicker for example. it got us in the $hit we're in today. but danny has already made some astute squad changes, and all of a sudden we look like a flexible squad that could adapt to most formations....even 4-4-2! i just really hope we can get mclaughlin and shea on season long loans.
I've wanted us to play this formation since the first day against Wigan. It was very fluid yesterday though and that to me made it an attacking formation.
personally I go with the theory that no one system works for everything, and for mer it would be a different argument now anyway because Danny is getting the personnel sorted, and upgraded!
Correct. I felt our wide men did a good job without the ball and that makes a big difference. Jennings and Kennedy worked as a team and so did the new right back and Shea. Jim and Dawson have legs and a lot of energy, on and off the ball and thats important. Back to Jay, that is the formation that will cause a lot of teams problems. you don't need two strikers to score. Pace and ability's more important to me.
