Its official - mines ballacksed. Keeps freezing all the time and no matter how many anti-virus scans I do none show up.

Been advised to format it - how do I do that?

And also which ant-virus/spyware software should I download when its all done? For free obviously like...

re-boot and look for the prompt for set up...nomally an F key.... but be sure you either have a system restore set up at hand or the appropriate discs

Before you do that, if you have xp you may be able to use system restore. Restore the pc back to a time when it was working properly.
    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/systemrestore.mspx

    Also:
your power supply might be playing up
    your chip is overheating
    you have some bad ram
    graphics card drivers
    dust on the motherboard.

Have a look inside and make sure the motherboard isn't covered in dust and that all the components and cables are secured properly and that the heatsink isn't as hot as the sun.

affraid so, but do not worry its not a long job. What pc is it , what make.mine has the hard drive partitioned in a way that it is as if I have a D drive terefore if I need to clear out all the **** of virus/worms/spyware etc..I just select the set up on the boot up and it just does it all.It keeps all my good stuf and kicks all the crap out.But don't ask me how it came with the machine...but bloody handy.

Does no harm at all to format and set up again every now and again. it gets rid of the dross you pick up along the way.

If it is a Named PC as in HP.. Packard bell etc etc, you should either have a restore disk or be able to boot up from a restore partition when the computer starts.

If it is single build then you will need to ensure you have ALL your drivers disks etc then boot with the XP disk in so it boots to CD. Then follow the instructions, i would say a repair would not get shut of the problems you describe so you will have to format. there is a choice to do that after the initial files have been put onto the hard drive, just make sure you READ WHAT IT SAYS ON THE SCREEN do not install an extra XP as it just creates problems.

Other way is to format from a floppy either an old 98 set up disk or the install disk from your make of hard drive, they all do one on their sites.
