My mum's got to give evidence soon and it's causing her no end of stress and sleepless nights. I was hoping they'd be able to wrap it up before it gets round to her, but that doesn't look likely. She was one of the more senior St John Ambulance people on duty. She doesn't really lke to talk about it, as she really struggled in the aftermath. I can't really go into too much detail, but she was very upset with some of the things that a vocal member of the bereaved Liverpool parents said to her and about the first aid provision in general. I think she tried to resuscitate one of his children, but it was an impossible task due to the injuries. She did, however, manage to save one of the fans who had stopped breathing. Of course, it's the others that she couldn't that stick with her. I was supposed to be on duty there too, but backed out in the morning, because we seemed to have enough personnel going and I couldn't bring myself to miss the Reds match to watch somebody else, no matter how big the game. I have had a mixture of relief and regret ever since, although my mum said she was glad I wasn't there. I was a first year student nurse in Liverpool at the time, so my only real involvement was meeting some of the families afterwards. A few of the St John personnel have already been up and the things they said reflects exactly what they said to me at the time. To be fair, they haven't been given a hard time and have been praised for their efforts by the Liverpool families and their solicitors, and rightly so. One of my mates actually jumped into the crowd, as others were climbing out, as he saw someone collapse. I just wish they could wrap it up without my mum having to go through any more. They have already had her in to go through her statement and when she showed visible signs of the stress it was causing she was told to call the Samaritans. All this because the police/government couldn't tell the truth, because they didn't want to admit their part in it.
From the Beeb He said although he was "delighted at the promotion" he later came to think he "probably was not the best man for the job on the day". "With hindsight, I should have thought about my limited knowledge of the role of a commander in a major event, that was an all-ticket, sell-out, when I had not been responsible, or in that responsible position previously."
But he only takes responsibility and recognises that he wasn't up for it and that there was a cover up with everything that entails because the report was released to the families.if this hadn't happened he would still be going along happily with his life knowing the victims were being blamed. Disgraceful!!!!! Feel sorry for Gordon and his family and all the others involved for the trauma this must be causing them all for as he says the bstds covered it up with the help of the govt at the time. Not expecting any repercussions for the higher authorities tbh that bird has flown with no little help from the tabloid press especially.
And that's what riles me Marlon there are people involved in policing and the media that knew what happened that day and shoved the blame onto the supporters leaving themselves to get on with their jobs instead of being held accountable. It's disgusting and shows you how rotten the government was back then covering things up just seems to have been normal to the authorities.
plenty of people around the football world and on here for that matter have slated the liverpool families for not letting it drop, maybe now they will realise why...
The bloke comes across as a reyt wally. Promoted way above his abilities. Or is that what he wants everyone to believe? A great example of the Peter Principle in effect. We are run by incompetence.
That's terrible what your Mother went through Gordon just terrible. To be put in a situation like that and now having to deal with it all again. I hope she can get through it alright mate.
