Perkins, Dawson, Kelvin, Mellis, Jennings...with JOB, Cywka, RNL & Digby on standby I doubt many midfields will be able to contain that. Workrate, intensity, creativity, pace. Very very exciting
Back when we were doing very well and looked as if we could maybe challenge for a playoff spot we had: Vaz Te, Drinkwater, Butterfield, Perkins, O'Brien in midfield with Davies up front. If we were to play a similar formation, next season would see us with: Jennings, Etuhu, Mellis, Perkins, O'Brien/Dawson in midfield with O'Grady up front. Which would you prefer?
Etuhu has got to show consistent form for a full season, which I think he will do. Weare looking very strong in middle of park. Still concerned we need central defender(s).......and I've said before, Digby could end up being a surprise star in this position.
I think the one we have now has a better balance to it. Only slight thing is that we had much more 'firepower' before ie. 3 players who can score regularly or make the keeper save from 25yards.
I believe Dawson, Etuhu and perkins are quite similar. Especially at Oakwell. There isn't a Drinkwater in the above and that's why i think Digby or even RNL could play in the middle. Still think it's a risk playing Mellis deeper even though he thinks he's improved 60% off the ball.
You can make the word 'Drinkwater' out of their names if you use the same 'r' twice. So that's a good thing.
Having never seen the guy play how can I say? There's a lot of chat on here about him but how many of us have seen him play? On the other hand I've seen Reuben play quite a lot at different levels and it's easy to see that's he's a talent that could break through and play at a much higher level.
So what you are saying then Phil is already you have made up your mind on Jennings. Why? Because he could take the place of one of your heroes in the first team.
To be honest, Reuben has already demonstrated his ability - albeit in flashes - at this level. I know he's not everyones cup of tea on here for whatever reason but in the games he's played in I don't recall too many mares. Whereas, I remember him looking quality in a fair few. And toward the end of last season he looked like something had clicked, and his defensive game really come on. The performance at LWB against Hull was superb. And they're no mugs, they're in the Prem for a reason (season). And let's not forget he's only 19. As for Dale, I haven't seen him play in the flesh, but he certainly looks exciting when viewing video footage of him. And so I'm optimistic on the move. It helps knowing that Flicker (and Keith before him) have a fairly successful hit rate in terms of recruitment. But we were told the former Benfica and Liverpool youth Toni Silva was going to be worth £3m etc, and last I noticed he was on the bench for Dagenham on loan. So at this stage, I'd suggest we tread carefully, and give the lad time. It's ok to be excited, but let's not jump on him if he's not as good as Arjen Robben. He does follow in good ex BFC scouse footsteps, though. Hignett... Hammill.. Sheron.
Our midfield is a bit like a car park. We need someone strong enough to 'hold up' the barrier (O'Grady), so a Rolls Royce can drive in (Cranie), otherwise it is pretty useless. Is Keith Hill bringing a book out?
