Glad to see the BBC wasting license payers money again over bidding on something the commercial stations can do just as well
I could almost understand if the demand was high and it was going to pay TV Even then though I am not so sure Cricket is a prime example. The beeb never did it that well. Not focussed no overseas tours. Sky are way way better.
Exactly. The cars are moving adverts so should not be on the BBC. Hate all adverts, junk mail, spam. rant over
According to this, ITV decided they didn't want to renew http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2008/mar/20/bbc.sportsrights Races out of peak times aren't good for their advertising revenues. Surprised the BBC came in as live sport is pretty much "dead money" for them, but it's the best place for F1 as they don't have to go for ad breaks during the action.
I resent F1 Like all good sport fans, I try to copy my heroes and all it leads to is trouble. I got nearly as many points as Hamilton last year but they cost me £60 for every three. What incentive does that give me to try to better myself ?
I remember when it used to be on the BBC Ooh, there's a rugby game on, let's show that instead. Ooh, there's some show jumping, let's show that instead. Ooh, there's some skiing, let's show that instead. Ooh, there's a crappy old film we've broadcast a million times before, let's show that instead. The ad breaks on ITV are a pain, but at least they show every Grand Prix live, plus highlights. The BBC didn't even get close to that sort of coverage.
Jay, you need to check your facts. The Grand Prix were live on the BBC, mate. Not sure where your info has come from.
RE: Glad to see the BBC wasting license payers money again The problem is that we're damned if we do & damned if we don't. When we lose a contract, the knives are out, as they are when we get something back, only brandished by a different set of moaning licence-payers. I agree with you - F1 isn't a sport, just a competition to see which little rich boys can throw the most money at their cars. Leaves me cold, unless there's a huge pile-up on the first corner. BUT, there's a huge audience that enjoy such things and when the budgets allow it, we have to try and meet those demands.
RE: I remember when it used to be on the BBC Think I can recall breaks in coverage when it was part of Sunday Grandstand and the BBC had plenty of top class sporting action probably before Sky bought the rights to everything.
