DEFENDER Stephen Foster has been named the Reds' new Club Captain.

Stephen told www.barnsleyfc.co.uk: "I am absolutely delighted. That is probable the best way to describe how I am feeling at the moment after being handed the armband on a full time basis.

"To get the captains' role last season when Brian Howard was not around was nice but to be made Club Captain at Oakwell is a massive honour.

"I do not think it will make me play any differently but I am more of a talker than a shouter on the pitch anyway.

"It is a massive honour for me and I know my family will be extremely proud".

Reds boss SImon Davey added: "Stephen is a fantastic professional and has shown all the character needed to be a fantastic captain for this football club.

"It was not an easy decision and we have a lot of players, like Darren Moore, who are captains on the football field but the way Stephen conducts himself, both on the pitch and off it, is an example to all young professionals and youngsters and someone people can look up to".

    Excellent decision

    Model professional footballer.

Now he'd never think of smashing a fellow human beings face in with his elbow.

wonder what Macken makes of it all?

not that I'd have given him the job in the first place-defenders generally make better captains -and managers

Bit of a jab at Howard maybe? He certainly wasn't a talker...</p>

Why should he be that bothered?

Foster has stood in as captain many times, Macken's only done it a handful.

RE: wonder what Macken makes of it all?

Foster has been at the club longer and naturally a striker has his back to the game a lot of the time, they make poor captains.

The Obvious Choice. Well Done Stephen Foster

He's shown faith in us by signing a new contract and Davey should be praised by showing faith in Stephen and making the right choice.

Best player for this honour IMO - might have been part of the reason he was happy to commit to a longer contract with us maybe?

Very well deserved. As Davey says players like Moore don't need the armband to also lead.
