I was looking through some of the old family photograph albums my wife has put together down the years and I found a snap of myself with two of my lads. The Club shirts the boys are wearing and the " Ooh! Gerry Gerry" T- shirt tell me it was taken during the 1989-90 season. Absolutely amazing where that time has gone. My son to my left, is now in his forties and our roles have reversed, in that he drives me and his eleven year old to our home games at Oakwell.
I wish JBR. That was the Mayor of Wetwang " Twice nightly " Whiteley I believe. Amazing how tastes change isn't it.? Big plastic frames and tinted lenses were all the rage back then.
Thanks for seeing it to be lighthearted, as intended. I too, like your son now, am in my 40s and love matchdays with my own son, and hope that one day, like yourself, we will make three generations of Barnsley fans going together. For what it’s worth, my own Dad was a glory hunting Leeds fan who looked more like Freddie Mercury, so you have done parenting properly by supporting proper football whilst giving Carol Vorderman a leg up in life.
No probs mate. Talking about "Twice nightly ", when I worked in Leeds I used to pop down to Elland Road to watch a midweek match with some of the University lads in our digs. RW used to stand under the floodlights near us. Remember he enjoyed a bit of banter and was always laughing and joking with his mates. It's only when he first appeared on Calendar that it dawned on me that he was the same bloke we had seen down at Elland Road. Never forget seeing him some years later interviewing the owner of " that ferret." Absolute classic television.
