I tried to draw out some cash on Thursday and was unable to, tried 3 times in different machines to no avail. I then tried again on Friday morning and still unable to complete the transaction. When I got home I found a letter from my bank asking me to ring them re Fraudulent Activity on my switch card.
I did so and could not believe what I was hearing. Some 'company' had tried to debit our account using my card details to the tune of £1800, there were other transactions of a minor nature too. The bank told me that they had been suspicious of this company and had been tracking them, They had declined several requests for payments and then put a block on my card.

    I am horrified.

    What do I do now?
How did they get these details on my card?

I have a paypal account that has been verified but I am at a loss as to how they got my details. There had been loads of requests on my card for ITunes etc

How can I protect myself can anyone offer me any advice?
The bank has cancelled the card so they can't use it anymore
    :'(
    What do I do?

not any use now but for the future you can buy card protection, about £20 or £30 a year for all your cards. I would negotiate with the bank to see if they will refund as a matter of goodwill.

    Sorry to hear that

Do you scan your computer for viruses regularly?

Keep cool leave it to your bank. Has also happened to us this last week, according to our bank the money was a fraudulent internet transaction. We too are mystified as to how , but it would appear that there is an internet site somewhere in Russia where ANYONES card details including the security number can be bought for a very small fee. According to Sky investigators there is a set up between this site and Nigeria, . Only advice I would offer is check with your banks that you are protected should this happen to you. AND take care with your details, shred all paper reciiepts done on cards and only deal with secure sites.</p>

Yes they will refund and we were lucky as they neber actually got the money as payment was declined. But how do I protect myself in the future. I am on that Sentinel card protection thing I'll have to have a look and see if it covers fraudulent activity, but how on earth did they get my details? That's what I can't understand.

Thanks love and sorry this has happened to you. We do shred all our receipts and I can't remember buying anything off the Internet or eBay for ages now. The Russian site sounds interesting, and hardly surprising that it's linked with Nigeria. My hubby has remained cool and offered the same advice - the bank knows what its doing but I'd love to know where I slipped up, if I did. It's scary though, isn't it?

do a full system clean up on your machine

i.e. full virus check with up to date definition files
full spyware check using 2 or 3 different programs - some are better than others

once you have done this then go round and change all your passwords that you have at all your online places.

dont do this before cos if there are any hacking tools on your machine they may get the new passwords.

it might be that the details of your card were not got by a breach on your own pc - it might be someone up to no good where the data was held or they might have been hacked too. You may not ever find out but wont hurt to do some housekeeping as above.

Right Omen. I will set about and do just what you say right now. Incidentally the bank did advise me to change all my passwords so will do that too. Thanks love.

    Nowt came of it lol.
Yes only down a tenner but bank say they will refund it.
Just a quick question but would a full reformat be even better if I can get hubby to do it? I'll then have to sit and load everything back up!

My friend had the same problem earlier this year. He did get the money back and his bank told him to use a limited account card for online transactions. So now he has a debit card that he only has £250 on at any one time. His bank also phones him up if the think that it is being used in a suspicious way. I think he is with the Co-Operative bank in town.

last week I was buying car insurance recommended thro the above site. I had entered all my details -including credit card-into a secure site and was just about to hit the 'buy' button when my mobile rang. The caller gave the impression he was from the company I was dealing with on the'net' but something made me suspicious. I said I would call back
but instead rang the insurance company direct. When I told them about the person who had interceded, they were very relaxed. The company that had tried to pinch the business were a bona fide Insurance company. Scary what?

RE: Which spyware? I have a full Norton System and

a full xsoft spy system plus the freebie spybpt and use them . We also shred everything, I recon my systems are as secure as they could be. What worries me more than my own set up is the BANKING systems are they as secure as they ought to be. We will never know.

Its happened to me twice with a visa card

Once I am sure the card was cloned in Asia a card I never use on the internet the other time I really have no idea where the details came from as its a small value card I only use for internet transactions - I can only assume that someone either leaked the details somehow

Both times I have had no problems at all getting the card re-issued and money refunded.

I must admit I never use a debit card online low value credit limit card is the way I have done it.

I dont think there is any foolproof way to stop your details being used by someone else just keeping vigilant and being careful is the best you can do
